As a Garofalo Fellow at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), Cédric Van Parys traveled Chicago's highways and city streets, photographing billboard structures and linking them to the layered meanings of advertising slogans and data.

Initiated by Jayne Kelley (UIC) and designed by Lu Liang, SENTINELS reinforces the perception of billboards as contemporary sacred monuments — like sentinels, they guard and protect while at the same time welcoming you home.

"July Morning"

Currently on show at Amare in Damme until September 27, 2026.

My work often starts from the landscape to explore the cultural analogy between sacred spaces and infrastructure. “July Morning,” presented at Amare, is part of an ongoing series of kinetic installations in which gravity, weight, time, and motion play an important role. In response to the horizon, the tree lines and vineyard, a series of tall vertical metal poles balance horizontal brass rods, gently move with the wind, and announce the position of the sun. It’s a constellation that levitates between a scientific phenomenon and a supernatural omen. It’s a clock, windmill, and compass all in one.

Amaré 2026 is a contemporary art exhibition that unfolds in and around Damme, Belgium. A selection of artists will respond to this specific landscape, seeking to connect the profane with the sacred.

Inspired by the vast meadows and fields, canals, and iconic rows of poplars, I will build a new large-scale kinetic installation that engages with gravity, wind, and time.

"Amaré 2026"

Among storks nesting high on the rooftops in Damme and pensive swans gliding through Bruges' Minnewater, the Flemish polder landscape unfolds—defined by vast meadows and fields, canals, and iconic rows of poplars. Amaré 2026 is an art route organized by entrepreneur Luc Beke and curator Annelies Ysebaert, in which around twenty artists respond to this specific landscape, seeking to connect the profane with the sacred.

I will develop a kinetic installation that engages with gravity, wind, and time to respond to the horizon, the tree lines, and man-made infrastructure in the distance.
