The works of Madelon Vriesendorp and Sylvia Libedinsky coincide at least in one aspect: both are determined to separate their work from recognised labels in art, good citizenship or any kind of correctness. Such disrespect could be seen as a comment on status labels or as an attempt to demote their own work. It is probably both: An effort to rethink and possibly confuse. For MILKING IT, Madelon describes her work, which would normally be considered sculpture, as "The after-life of a milk bottle". In LONG, LONG, STILL LIFE, Sylvia co-opts the "still life" genre and merges it with the “DIY approach of children’s books" .They are persistent in this subversive vein, which is also consistent with their points of view: Madelon insists that her art is misconceptual, while Sylvia pedantically appeals to the rules of grammar, saying she cannot be an artist, because the word "artist" is an adjective. When reminded that "Artist is actually a noun", Sylvia asks, “Well, who makes the rules?”.
