Garage Rotterdam is a medium-sized exhibition centre for contemporary art in the city centre of Rotterdam. Founded in 2011, it is housed in a unique 500m2 building which used to function as a Volkswagen Garage, but has been transformed into a dynamic non-profit art centre with coffee-corner under the leadership of architect Remy Meijers. By organizing four qualitative art exhibitions yearly, Garag

e Rotterdam connects local Rotterdam-based artists with established names from the international art scene, therefore creating a platform for upcoming and established artists and curators. The exhibitions are complemented by a carefully chosen public program, consisting of screenings, talks, music, performances and readings, bringing together different disciplines and fields. While the event Brandstof brings depth to the exhibitions through a program of talks, readings and performances, the event Natafelen enables the visitors to dine with the artists and curators of the show, all within the ambience of the exhibition and under the culinary vision of chef Laurence van Bergeijk.

Up next at Garage Rotterdam → 𝘼𝙣 𝙀𝙮𝙚 𝘿𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙎𝙪𝙣

We look forward to welcoming you back in September for the opening of An Eye Dreads the Sun, curated by Cynthia Jordens.

Materials are not silent witnesses. They carry stories and traces of origin and loss, and transmit knowledge. In 𝘼𝙣 𝙀𝙮𝙚 𝘿𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙎𝙪𝙣, earth, plant-based pigments, textiles, sound, and the human voice act as vessels of memory. In the works in this exhibition, materials offer a way of tracing the marks left behind by history.

The title, drawn from a poem by Etel Adnan, evokes an ambiguous image: the sun as a life-giving force as well as an eye that witnesses violence, strife, and displacement. In the monumental installation ‘A Thousand Sunsets’ (2026), Atousa Bandeh gives this tension material form. The installation brings together the ever-changing colours of sunsets, seemingly suspending this fleeting moment in time.

The exhibition focuses on what often remains out of sight and what the sun ultimately brings to light. Taqwa Ali works with natural materials such as seawater, salt, hibiscus, and limestone to explore the relationship between landscape and displacement. In ‘A Score for Atat’s Homestead’, AYO evokes a remembered homeland through sound. In Jennifer Tee’s work, the tulip refers to colonial trade networks, while Nolan Oswald Dennis reworks the tools and logic of archaeology to question how histories are extracted from land.

Join us for a summer edition of Natafelen, set within the exhibition 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗧𝗼: 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. During this intimate evening, we will dine among the artworks and engage in conversation with curator Marijn Bril and several participating artists. Between courses, they will share stories, reflections, and insights into the exhibition.

For her graduation project, Vladislava Bocheva (.bo4e), a Creative Business student at Breda University of Applied Sciences, explored what attracts audiences to cultural events. Her research focused on Brandstof, Garage Rotterdam’s public programme of performances, talks, and artistic interventions developed in dialogue with each exhibition.
This video is the visual outcome of her research, filmed during the most recent edition of Brandstof and featuring a performance by Natalia Papaeva as part of the exhibition At the End(s) of the World: The Ground Is Shifting.

Instructions are everywhere. From fitness routines and makeup tutorials to algorithms, official procedures, and implicit codes of conduct, they shape how we move through everyday life. At first glance, they appear as neutral tools – simply as ways to get things done. They help us operate a device, follow a workout, or complete a form correctly. At the same time, instructions translate complex realities into manageable steps, defining what counts as logical, desirable, or successful. As such, they encode cultural norms, institutional priorities, and power dynamics.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗧𝗼: 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 approaches instructions both as a method and as a subject of critical inquiry. Through performative strategies, illustrations, and video installations, the artists examine how instructions shape behaviour, identities, and perception. They dissect manuals, rewrite tutorials, and develop new instructions that – echoing the spirit of Fluxus – range from poetic to absurd.

Next up at Garage Rotterdam → Tingyi Jiang’s 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗜𝘁 𝗙𝗶𝘁 – 𝗔 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘁 during Brandstof, Saturday 13 June - 8 PM.

For this site-specific adaptation, Tingyi Jiang moves beyond the stage and into the spaces surrounding Garage Rotterdam. Guided by the artist’s performative speech, the audience is invited to walk along as the performance shifts between the white cube, the rooftop, and the street.

Make It Fit – A Life Script is a multidisciplinary performance exploring how language shapes authority, identity, and social norms. Moving between singing, conversation, and staged speech, the work examines the internalised script of “making it fit.” By reconfiguring these forms within both museal and public space, this adaptation reveals their control mechanisms while allowing space for deviation, vulnerability, and chance. The performance unfolds as an evolving live script between theatre, exhibition, and everyday life.
