Shōfūkan, based in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, offers the study and practice of authentic Japanese disciplines in an environment that breathes Japan and is most inspiring. The centre operates from a 1929 nursery school building in Oud Charlois, Rotterdam, which these days features a Japanese garden, a roji (tea garden), Senshin-an (an authentic Japanese tea house in soan style), a Japanese dojo, a

nd multiple class rooms. These rooms and spaces at the Shōfūkan are used for lessons and training, workshops, exhibitions, lectures, and events - all in the field of the Japanese arts and crafts. To ensure high standards, the center co-operates with teachers and organisations in Europe and from Japan. Senshin-an embodied the spirit of Shofukan: to participate in a tea ceremony with real matcha, following the authentic traditions of the Urasenke school.

We donated our Japanese teahouse to our tea friends in Paris. Last year, during our twentieth anniversary celebration, they gave a wonderful demonstration of sencha tea ceremony.

A group of specialized carpenters from France, who also helped rebuild the stairs of Notre-Dame, came to Rotterdam to dismantle the teahouse.

All the people and businesses who contributed to the project in 2012 will be invited to visit Senshin-an in Paris once it is ready.

At our new location in Sweden, we will build a small teahouse in the woods fitting for the contemplative atmosphere of tea practice.
