The Pallet Painting
This is not a pallet. It is a tree, cut down, assembled into an attribute for transport, and discarded after it fulfilled this purpose. Johannes is restoring its identity as a tree. Giving it back its value by returning it to the woods.

A few years ago Johannes discarded woodpallets and at one point, like a switch in the brain he did not see a pallet anymore but a composition of lines and spaces. The lines of the wooden bars are given, they have been made for him, as does the total construction. He transformed the object and emphasized the spatial differences by lifting the bars, elevating the lines, by a color composition inspired by an array of colors he sees being in the forests/woods.

Johannes Steendam might be more known for his Oilfields he has been making for over the last 10 years-abstract compositions with a strong relation to nature and landscape made with used motor oil.

Painting with Liquid History
Johannes Steendam’s Olievelden (Oil Fields) series transforms refined earth—petroleum—into profound visual experiences. By applying used motor oil to paper, Steendam captures the unique "DNA" of each engine and owner. His process is a delicate dance with chance; he provides the structure, but allows the oil’s natural viscosity and "bleeding" to finish the story. The result is a body of work that meditates on temporality, the transformation of the landscape, and the beauty found in industrial remnants.

Opening EXPO + Proost op een kleurrijk 2026! 🥂🎨
Samen vieren we zondag 4 januari 2026 om 20:00 uur de opening van de expositie in Café LaBru aan de Hartmansstraat 18A in Rotterdam. De expositie is de hele maand januari dagelijks te bezoeken van 15:00 tot 01:00.

OVER HET PROJECT
De Rotterdammer is een project geïnspireerd op The New Yorker, met als doel het talent van lokale kunstenaars te laten zien en de persoonlijkheid van de stad te verbeelden aan de hand van
geïllustreerde covers van een fictief tijdschrift. Iconische plekken en evenementen, maar ook
intieme scènes uit het dagelijks leven in Rotterdam, worden weergegeven in een collectie
hoogwaardige kunstprints. Het project is eind 2024 gestart en heeft tot nu toe ongeveer 30
kunstenaars betrokken, evenals diverse tentoonstellingen, interviews en markten verspreid door de stad.

De Rotterdammer is a project inspired by The New Yorker with the aim to show the talent of local artists and the personality of this city through illustrated covers of a fictional magazine. Iconic spots and events but also intimate scenes of the daily life in Rotterdam displayed in a collection of quality art prints. The project started in late 2024 and has so far hosted around 30 artists, along with several exhibitions, interviews, and markets across the city.

WHO ARE THEY?

Gözde and Enric, two Rotterdammers by adoption, wanted to create a collaborative project to connect with the illustration community.

Gozde Eyce is a visual artist originally from Istanbul, based in Rotterdam. Her work includes relatable and imperfect illustrations, mostly in collaboration with publishers, NGOs, and small businesses.

Enric Adell is a graphic designer and illustrator from Barcelona, established in Rotterdam since 2019. He combines his work as the Art Director of magazines Rouleur, Volata and Pickpocket with freelance illustration and design jobs.

Verbale sekswerker Pim Holland (18+) is bewapend met intieme woordjes voor rode oortjes én choreografietjes op vieze liedjes (een hit op Oerol). Dit maakt Pim een sekssymbool die de mensheid helpt een hand onder de riem te steken. Pim speelt samen met MARIO.

MARIO is beeldend kunstenaar, dichter en raketgeleerde. Dit laatste is niet zeker, hoewel hijzelf ervan overtuigd is dat hij dingen kan laten knallen! Maak tijdens Noorderdicht kennis met zijn alter ego Mario Rijmmond. Op speelse en eigentijdse wijze, en geheel volgens de volkskunstige aard van de Rotterdammert, geeft hij zijn bek een douw met platte teksten poëzie & print; alles op maat gemaakt. Maak u klaar voor stand-up poetry avant la lettre. Ruig, schuin en bijna onmisbaar: Mario.

Noorderdicht is het gezelligste woordkunstfestival van Nederland. Een festival met 21 locaties en 75 artiesten bij de bar: Noorderdicht bij de Bar in het Oude Noorden en Crooswijk. Geniet van muziek, poëzie, comedy en meer bij diverse bars!

Geniet van muziek, poëzie, spoken word, smartlappen, dans, cabaret en theater. Artiesten trekken als duo rond en treden telkens een kwartiertje op, waardoor je een breed scala aan acts kunt ervaren. Naast de optredens zijn er gidstours beschikbaar om de verhalen van de buurten te ontdekken. De toegang tot de optredens is gratis, maar voor de gidstours is een ticket nodig.

HAADJAR's Art: A Celebration of Egyptian and Inner Worlds
​HAADJAR's work is a vibrant celebration of Egyptian culture, or Egyptian-Dutch roots, growth, and her inner world. Her pieces, often executed in oil pastel and acrylic on paper, burst off the canvas with an explosion of bright, contrasting colors. This color choice is not random; it reflects Haadjar's cheerful nature and the spiritual richness of an Egyptian, mystical, or fantastical experience. She uses an Expressionist style, emphasizing emotion and inner experience over realistic representation.

​Thematic Focus: Spirituality and Mythical Beings
​The themes in her work are deeply rooted in Egyptian and indigenous spirituality. She is inspired by mysticism, spirituality, dreams, and fantasies. Her art is populated with a range of wondrous beings: from an Earth Mother Goddess to mysterious forest spirits and water spirits. These creatures are not simple illustrations but embody forces, emotions, and spiritual concepts. The human figures in her work are often in harmony with these beings, emphasizing the connection between humanity, nature, and the spiritual realm.

​Form and Symbolism
​The wondrous creatures in her work are often hybrid in nature: alternating between human, animal, or combinations of different people, fantasy creatures, and animal species. This form reflects the transformative power of nature and the possibility of metamorphosis. They often carry symbolic objects, such as flowers, smiling vases, or spiritual symbols, that underscore their role and meaning in mythology. They are not static figures but appear to be in motion, dancing or floating in an ethereal space, which contributes to the mystical and dreamlike character of her art.

​A Visual Spiritual Quest
​Haadjar's work is also a visual expression of a spiritual quest. Through her art, she attempts to make visible the unseen world of spirits and the forces that shape Egyptian culture and her inner self. The final week of Remy van Aarden’s art & poetry expo at Café LaBru has begun!

Structured chaos, raw energy, and poetic movement — Remy's explosive drip paintings and words light up the space of Café LaBru for four more days until this saturday. 

Structured Chaos Through Energy and Movement

The driving force behind creating paintings is to inspire people. The main goal is to use creativity to pull the viewer away from a one-dimensional image or line of thought.

Remy grew up in a region with a rich history of Dutch painters. He used to live on the same street where Willem de Kooning grew up before he left for New York. That’s a source of energy and inspiration for his work. In addition to De Kooning, he also draws from the styles of Mondrian, Turner, Appel, and Basquiat, but the majority of Remy's work is based on the style of Jackson Pollock: dripping.

By throwing, pouring, or dripping paint, an organized chaos of color emerges. In his studio, he hurls paint like there is no tomorrow; by completely letting go, new and unexpected patterns and color combinations arise.

In Rotterdam, where reconstruction seems to last forever and foundation piles set the rhythm, his work is well received. The energy and movement within the pieces resonate with the city’s dynamic nature.

About Astrando
Astrando Boerleider (born in Alkmaar, 1986) is a self-taught artist living and working in Rotterdam. By day, he lovingly cooks as a chef at restaurant Vis op de Dijk — but there’s another great passion that drives him: painting. In the late hours and on his days off, he seizes every opportunity to paint. His art springs from personal moments in his life — straight from the heart.

As a self-taught artist, Astrando is on a journey of discovery: to find himself and the artistic form through which he wants to express his story. And painting is just the beginning — Astrando doesn’t limit himself to one medium.

🔻Last day to visit Laura's work by Studio Amargo. Laura is afgestudeerd in Fine Arts aan de AKV St. Joost! 🎨 Als actief lid van heeft ze het zeefdrukken tot kunst verheven en een unieke stijl ontwikkeld. Ze heeft al op veel expo's gestaan en vandaag kun je haar werk nog zien in Café LaBru ✨
Naast haar kunst is ze ook grafisch ontwerper en geeft ze superleuke zeefdruk workshops! 🌈 Ze speelt met kleur en vorm om harmonie te creëren. Het is gelaagd, vol herhaling en 'invites you to explore! 👀




Café LaBru is dé knusse hotspot in Rotterdam (vlakbij Witte de With) waar retro zithoekjes en sfeervolle aankleding je direct omarmen. Of je nu neerploft op een van de loungy banken of een plekje zoekt aan de bar, de informele en gezellige ambiance is perfect voor elk moment. Geniet van een heerlijke cappuccino, een aperitief voor het diner, of een ontspannen slaapmutsje. En vergeet niet: elke woensdag geniet je van live jazz! 🎷

STUDIO AMARGO
Laura behaalde haar bachelordiploma in Fine Arts aan de AKV St. Joost in 's-Hertogenbosch. Tijdens haar studie ontdekte ze zeefdrukken en begon ze deze techniek in haar werk te verwerken, wat haar hielp een onderscheidende stijl te ontwikkelen. In de loop der jaren heeft ze deelgenomen aan talloze tentoonstellingen en creatieve projecten.
Naast haar artistieke praktijk werkt Laura als grafisch ontwerper en heeft ze ervaring in desktop publishing (DTP). Ze geeft ook creatieve workshops, voornamelijk gericht op zeefdrukken, vaak in samenwerking met scholen. Laura gebruikt graag met kleuren en vormen en streeft ernaar een harmonieuze relatie tussen beide te creëren. Dit komt tot uiting in haar gebruik van herhaling, vormen die elkaar soms raken en soms juist gescheiden blijven, overlappende structuren en af en toe een mix van al deze elementen. Haar doel is om een opvallend kunstwerk te creëren dat kijkers uitnodigt om de balans tussen lagen en dimensies binnen het werk te analyseren en te ontdekken.
