On Saturday March 14th, two of today’s most incisive thinkers on technology, capitalism, political imagination and the rise of the populist right, Quinn Slobodian and Ben Tarnoff, will join us at to discuss their upcoming book ‘Muskism: A Guide for the Perplexed’.

If Fordism defined the capitalism of the twentieth century, Muskism may define the twenty-first. Fordism helped build the welfare state. Musk undoes it. He thrives on dependence while preaching freedom. His rockets run on subsidies; his satellites run the battlefield; his social networks train the AI that trains us. Muskism sells itself as the future, but entrenches age-old hierarchies. It offers autonomy for some and exclusion for others. It’s libertarian but state-fed, pro-natalist but anti-immigrant, futurist but reactionary.

🐦 Muskism: Playbook for a Postliberal Age with Quinn Slobodian & Ben Tarnoff

On Saturday March 14 we welcome two of today’s most incisive thinkers on technology, capitalism, political imagination and the rise of the populist right: Quinn Slobodian (Crack-Up Capitalism, Hayek’s Bastards) and Ben Tarnoff (Internet for the People, Voices from the Valley). Together, they will unpack their new book Muskism: A Guide for the Perplexed. In this highly anticipated work they examine Elon Musk not as an individual, but as a symptom and avatar of our postliberal age. Musk isn’t a glitch in the system — he is the system. His worldview promises sovereignty through technology: plug in, power up, and become self-reliant. But the more you connect, the more he owns you.

On Thursday, February 12, we welcomed two of Europe’s most influential and thought-provoking public intellectuals: Arnaud Orain, renowned economic historian whose work reshapes our understanding of capitalism’s evolution, and Caroline de Gruyter, award-winning journalist and one of the sharpest observers of European politics and the state of the liberal order.

They spoke on the occasion of the Dutch translation of Orain’s new book, The Finitude of the World: Boundless Capitalism from the Seventeenth Century to Today. In this groundbreaking work – prefaced by De Gruyter – Orain argued that while the neoliberal dream of uninterrupted growth has faded, capitalism itself remains very much alive. Its current phase is not unprecedented but part of a recurring historical dynamic: when the world is perceived as finite and its resources limited, capitalism shifts into a violent mode of rapid capture and exploitation. We now see this “Finitude Capitalism” at work in the privatisation and militarisation of the seas, in the rise of monopolistic and rentier trade, and in the encroachment of massive private companies claiming quasi-sovereign control over physical and digital space.

We hope to welcome you at one of our forthcoming events.

⚙️ Finitude Capitalism: Neoliberalism’s Predatory Turn w/ Arnaud Orain & Caroline de Gruyter

On Thursday, February 12, we welcome two of Europe’s most influential and thought-provoking public intellectuals: Arnaud Orain, renowned economic historian whose work reshapes our understanding of capitalism’s evolution, and Caroline de Gruyter, award-winning journalist and one of the sharpest observers of European politics and the state of the liberal order. Together they will explore how this shift from liberal to predatory capitalism emerged, who stands to gain – and who loses – in this zero-sum landscape, and what the implications are for Europe’s economic and geopolitical future.
