JESSICA VAN RUSCHEN
Morning class: 19th and 27th of March
The class begins with a short session of awareness training. Through a guided string of focus, the dancer consciously acknowledges his/her present state of Being and uses his physical observations to generate movement. Through guided and focused concentration we deepen our understanding of our mental and physical abilities, creating physical and mental openness to play with new possibilities and discover creative development of movement. The following technical part of the class consists of the known elements of ballet technique, which will be combined with floor work. Instead of mainly remaining in vertical plane Jessica strongly uses the horizontal plane to strengthen arms, torso and the centre of the body, promote understanding of bodyweight, tension and release, direction and timing: the physical organization necessary to move easy and quick through the floor and from horizontal to vertical.
Jessica was born in 1976 in Leer, Germany. After graduation she worked for Staatstheater Oldenburg, Stadttheater Heidelberg, Itzik Galili/Galili Dance, Piet Rogie/RogieCompany, SALLY, Vera Sander, Stephen Shropshire, Jens van Daele, Conny Janssen Danst and multiple freelance choreographers. During the last six years she worked as a company member of LANDERERCOMPANY in Hannover, Germany. She choreographed her own work under the production of Dansateliers Rotterdam and created two pieces for LANDERERCOMPANY in 2017 and 2019/20. In 2004 she started to develop her own work in the field of video film and edit. Within this area she produces short films, documentary and works for various choreographers in creating theatre visuals, registrations and promotional trailers.

ANTONIN RIOCHE
Morning class: 05th and 12th of March
Antonin uses improvisation skills within a different focus, for example directing movement and attention to different layers like the bones, the skin, and the muscles. The different individual layers that compose us, and how focus can influence dancing and movement qualities. Antonin also has interest in the work of weight and the roots that yoga has taught him, finding ways to develop them into dance and improvisation to arrive at the point of explorative letting go.
Starting off with a warm-up, a mix of exercises from the Hatha technique, meditation methods and also some breathing exercises to warm and wake up the body and mind to sensitivity. A passionate focus on movement coming from the inside out and vice versa. Redirecting energy and dancing with it.
Antonin Rioche (France, 1994) has previously worked with Sacha Waltz, Roy Assaf, Stijn Celis, Olivier Dubois, Marina Mascarell and with Korzo with Ryan Djojokarso. Rioche also had a desire to develop further in dance. At the invitation of Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui he takes his first steps as a choreographer with the production Oh Boy! who tours internationally with performances in Antwerp, Berlin, Paris, Geneva and The Hague..

What is De Studio Rotterdam? By Stefania Macchiafava
De Studio Rotterdam is a space of sharing, creativity and collaboration. A space where all the disciplines have the same value and influence each other in order to express complexity. The place where both movement and art is celebrated in its broadest perspective.
De Studio Rotterdam overcomes the idea of identity as something as defined, unique and untouched by change, to embrace the idea of a multiple and performative identity. Are we, what defines us? Are we, what the others think of us? Is a category enough to express who we truly are?
The answer of De Studio Rotterdam to those questions is to offer an open space for arts, movement and cultural exchange, where people from different backgrounds have the possibility to meet and develop projects together. Human beings are complex, contradictory, incoherent, curious and open to discoveries. Only through this awareness it is possible to understand the existence in its entirety. Considering this context, De Studio Rotterdam invites people to expand their comfort zone, expand their limited perspective of a self, or an identity. This in order to explore different possibilities than the currently known paths in the body and mind. Classes of movement, dance, yoga, martial arts together with artistic and cultural events, such as expositions, performances and lectures are the instruments that De Studio Rotterdam choses to represent the value of personal elevation through diversity.
We are constantly looking for uniqueness. We spend our life creating our personality. We present ourselves through words, thinking of them as tools to build our status. From one side this works, because the language is our immediate form of communication. But it is merely a medium, and it can never deeply express who we truly are. That’s why it is important to look for different forms of communication to express ourselves and to find uniqueness in out-of-balance forms. Uniqueness in flexibility, uniqueness in permeability. I believe, this is what De Studio Rotterdam stands for.
We can be different individuals in different contexts. We can feel comfortable in diversified situations that seem in contradiction with the image that people have of us, or the values expressed by the social group we belong to, without losing credibility. On the contrary, this is the way to reach authenticity.
