【Artist Statement: POPCORN】
When we began working on this project, the anxiety and fear of COVID were somewhat distant to me. We had experienced over a year of relative normality and safety here in Taiwan, and I had been able to keep up my drag performances in packed venues largely without interruption. However, the stories from families overseas of sickness, lockdowns, and death created a constant state of fear that we could end up in the same position. Our team had channeled these dualities of freedom and fear into what we had created thus far. It had been cathartic and given us a sense of purpose and connection to one another. We were grateful to be able to keep creating when artist friends the world over were unemployed and suffering.

The recent outbreak in Taiwan has lent this project a whole new layer of meaning. As a drag performer and an artist, the wave of death along with the sudden disappearance of community events and work projects has been tremendously anxiety-inducing. As things begin to improve, we are looking forward to once again using this project as a vessel to pour our creativity into, healing the feelings of anxiety and regaining the sense of freedom and optimism we have been missing so much. The completion of SSS is deeply important to our little crew of creatives, as we work together in these dark times to build something special and meaningful.
