Het atelier van... Kim van Norren — De schilderijen van Kim van Norren beginnen altijd met woorden of muziek. Meestal zijn liedteksten de voedingsbodem voor haar kleurrijke abstracte doeken, maar in haar nieuwe werkt haalt ze ook inspiratie uit poëzie en sportcommentaar. In haar atelier in Kampen pakte ze na een moeilijke periode de draad weer op. Door woorden te schilderen creëerde Van Norren opnieuw ruimte voor zachtheid en verbondenheid. In haar nieuwe tentoonstelling ‘I Will Soften Every Edge’ bij ROOF-A onderzoekt Van Norren hoe liefde, kwetsbaarheid en zelfreflectie ons houvast kunnen bieden in moeilijke tijden. Incorporating a sign or symbol was one of our wishes. You interpreted this thoughtfully and meaningfully through the hyphen—a symbol of connection that evolved into a defining element of both the concept and the gallery’s identity.

Having recently revisited the original brief, it is striking how accurately it was interpreted. The essence, ambition, and even the smallest nuances found their way into a visual identity that remains as relevant and resilient today as it was then. JOHAN TAHON | NEW ARTIST COLLABORATION

It is with great pleasure and pride that ROOF-A Gallery announces a new collaboration with the renowned Belgian sculptor Johan Tahon (1965). By representing him, the gallery is adding an artist of international stature to its programme. In Tahon’s oeuvre, ROOF-A Gallery recognises a powerful exploration of universal themes such as spirituality, vulnerability, hope and transformation. This collaboration marks a significant step in the gallery’s ambition to represent artists who, through a distinctive artistic vision, make a meaningful contribution to contemporary art.

Tahon has created an impressive body of work comprising bronze, plaster and ceramic sculptures: wounded giants and unapproachable angels, tormented creatures and demure monks, sensual nudes and amorphous hybrids. Whether monumental or small enough to fit in the palm of a hand, they all seem to float between earth and heaven. His sculptures are not an end in themselves, but a new beginning.

To celebrate this collaboration and new beginning, a curated selection of his work is now on view in the gallery. At the end of August, we will unveil our plans for the 2026 cultural season.

For now, you are more than welcome to visit the gallery, either by appointment or during regular opening hours.

Récolte, Veillée aux racines, 2025, Wax and steel, 116 × 221 × 16 cm

An artwork highlight from REBURN, the solo exhibition by French artist Juliette Minchin.

Created in the artist’s studio in Paris, this work underwent a three-month melting process in the former Convent of Sant’Orsola in Florence in 2024. After being burned, it was transported to Château La Coste in southern France for the exhibition Par quatre chemins, curated by POUSH. It is now presented in a steel frame at our gallery.

We are proud to bring together works that have travelled through Paris, Florence, Istanbul, and Château La Coste, creating an inspiring installation across the entire ground floor.

‘I Will Soften Every Edge’, Kim van Norren’s exhibition of new works opens tomorrow, May 30, at ROOF-A Gallery.

The exhibition will be opened by Richard Boddeus, Councillor for Culture in Kampen and longtime admirer and supporter of her work.
Kim van Norren creates paintings in which language and image are closely intertwined. Her texts, drawn from pop songs, poems, speeches, and personal notes, are chosen intuitively: words that resonate with her, linger in her mind, or gain significance at a particular moment in time.

Through paint on canvas, she explores how these words can be translated into colour, form, and rhythm, and how a personal experience can simultaneously evoke something universal.

We look forward to welcoming you in the presence of the artist.

The work 'Heading for a Fall' by Kim van Norren, described by Dominic van den Boogerd

Looking at 'We are heading for a fall' (2023), the painting’s vivid colours immediately catch the eye: yellow, lilac, green, starkly contrasting with black. ‘We are heading for a fall’, it reads, a reference to a song by the band Vaya Con Dios. There is a certain menace to this seemingly dispassionate announcement. With a little imagination, one could recognise an ominous stormy sky in the turbulent forms and electrifying colours.

A risky future is always more challenging and perhaps even more appealing than a past of fait accompli. There is no reason to fear the approaching doom, the message seems to be; let us face it with confidence.

A special moment last Monday at the Rechtbank Amsterdam. Almost a year ago, we stood in the same place where we have today installed Vera Gulikers’ The Mother (The Bobby in Me).

"In this work, the artist’s sculptural alter ego shares an intimate tête-à-tête with her newborn, while her legs fold above their heads like a protective bow. Beneath this cheerful imagery lies a critical reflection on female stereotypes. The elongated legs, for instance, poke fun at an impossible ideal of slimness, while simultaneously expressing the social pressure on women to contort themselves into all kinds of shapes." - De Volkskrant

A new icon for the court, placed in a prominent setting that feels deeply fitting in many ways. A festive day, which we rounded off with champagne and a traditional Dutch treat. We are incredibly proud and grateful for this wonderful commission in a place that is open to the public.

In painting and sculpture, the convincing depiction of folds is a proof of skill, but it often carries another meaning as well. Folds is a sign of wealth – surplus fabric – and thus of an abundance of time. Or of emotion: in his Pietà, Michelangelo gave Mary – in contrast to the smooth, naked body of her deceased son in her lap – a cloak with endless drapery: a safety net for her grief. The French artist Juliette Minchin creates drapery using wax.”
