This June, the and transform into the beating heart of 2026 - a month-long exploration of circular futures, collective building, and material reuse.

At Katoenhuis, we believe circularity, collectivity, reuse, and shared responsibility are essential for the future of cities and cultural production. As part of the wider Keile District ecosystem, we’re excited to see the area become a place where new ideas around collaboration, sustainability, and city-making can be tested and shared.

At the centre of the programme is a temporary Materials Depot: a flexible structure built from reused elements where discarded building materials gain a second life. More than a storage space, it becomes a meeting point for makers, residents, architects, designers, and builders — testing how a circular city could work in practice.
Nearby, the Keilepand presents The Power of Community, an exhibition exploring how collaboration and collective responsibility are key to circular urban development.

Throughout June, the district comes alive with workshops, markets, talks, tours, screenings, and public programmes across more than 40 locations in Rotterdam.

At the end of March, returned to and . An expedition through the area in full transformation, where port meets the city and where old quays are transforming into a vibrant ecosystem of living and working. At Katoenhuis, we were happy to be a part of the route. With artistic encounters between industrial buildings, Parfum de BoemBoem once again offered a fresh perspective on a district in transition.

NOISE – immersive opera by during .festival.rotterdam at Katoenhuis

In this immersive performance opera, born from the urgency to learn to navigate a collapsing world, Club Gewalt asks itself the question: how can you retune your senses amidst the constant noise of information predicting the apocalypse?

We live in a time of polycrisis. We are confronted with advancing fascism, the arrival of the climate crisis, Western complicity in a genocide, fruits and vegetables full of PFAS, and identities that turn out to be riddled with (internalized) sexism, racism, and homophobia.

Where a future of stability and progress was once promised, all systems around us and within ourselves threaten to collapse. The human survival instinct (LION! DANGER! FIGHT OR FLIGHT! SURVIVE! CELEBRATE!) falls short in the complexity of contemporary problems. Our amygdalas* are becoming massively overstimulated, and we are stranded in a panic limbo.

Can we learn to accept the collapse of systems as a law of the cosmos, without ceasing our protest against injustice? Can we heal ourselves by truly feeling the crises, instead of merely naming them? Can we, in this way, finally complete our stress cycles, enabling us to better navigate a world ablaze? Can we fall in love with being human again? And: is *this* the moment to seek God? Cuz: never waste a good crisis.

During 2026, Katoenhuis became the home of Lightroom – a new platform dedicated to immersive and non-linear storytelling.

Hosted at Katoenhuis alongside the Art Directions programme, the symposium formed part of a broader effort to connect immersive artistic practice with professional exchange and longterm sector development.

Across the day, participants examined the realities of producing, presenting and circulating immersive work. While artistic experimentation in the field has grown significantly in recent years, the systems designed to support it remain fragmented.

We’re happy to share the Lightroom Report 2026, capturing the key insights, questions and future directions that emerged from these discussions.

What a week! Thank you for visiting the Cosmic Cabinet exhibition at Katoenhuis. We were happy to offer a glimpse into what is usually hidden behind the walls of Katoenhuis: the studios, processes, and collaborations of our community artists. While it was the first time we presented their works together in one place, it is definitely not the last. More exciting opportunities to experience their work are coming soon, stay tuned!
