“My favorite parkside companions”

“With all the high rises and modern buildings of Eindhoven, we often forget about its parks which help bring some serenity to the city. I have been living in the past few years close to the Genderpark, which quickly became my absolute highlight of the city. Why? It’s close to everything but far enough for people to find peace and a piece of green in the city. What’s more to that is it gives home to numerous types of birds, including the Canada goose (not the garment brand). They usually hang out here in big flocks, even dozens of them belonging to one family. My artwork tries to capture them in a playful way, while also showing the versatility of this park, surrounded by the blocks of the city”.

“Metamorphosis”

“When I lived in Den Bosch, I visited the Moerputtenburg and the natural area around. I was impressed by the bridge structure, the biodiversity of the reserve and its important role for the butterfly’s conservation. With this illustration, I romantically and nostalgically revisit this place, reconnecting to my personal experience, and how much I grew during the time spent in Den Bosch. The subtle and delicate style of the fluid graphite and ink helped to create an image that looks almost out of a dream or memory, emphasizing the nostalgic feeling of those times”.

“Wet or fine”

“In Brabant, everything is done by bike. To high school ten kilometers away, with kilos of books on your back, the meadows frozen, your fingers too. To the foam party in the village, constant tugging at the too-short skirt you picked out, retiring home soaking wet and shivering from the cold. To the school camp in some Belgian village, after which—despite four days with zero hours of sleep—you still had to bike those fifty kilometers back. To the part-time job in the middle of nowhere, drinking your first after work beers, only to wipe out on the driveway of your parents’ house. Everything I loved and hated about my youth had to do with cycling. I love biking, and I hate biking.”.

“Houdoe”

“When I think of Brabant, I immediately think of that unique sense of conviviality – that warm feeling of togetherness that is so typical of Brabant. These moments often end with a cheerful ‘Houdoe hè!’ – a Brabant farewell that usually means something like ‘see you!’ and ‘take care!’. The word originated as an abbreviation of the expression “Houd u (zelf) goed”, which literally translates as "keep yourself well.". So when someone says “houdoe”, they are in fact wishing you all the very best as they say goodbye”.

“Beyond the Lecture Halls”

“Coming straight out of high school, I was nervous about starting my studies at the Technical University of Eindhoven. Afraid of not fitting in, of not being liked, and of losing myself. Even though the journey hasn't always been smooth sailing, over time I found something I hadn't expected: a place where I feel welcome, safe, and at home. The panels show small glimpses of everyday life beyond the lecture halls. Some of these moments bring the community together, while others offer comfort and rest. Together, they made me realize that I belong here too”.

“Brabantse Gezelligheid”

“The best part about Brabant are the people. They are often kind, lively and love to have a good time with their friends and family. This is exactly what I wanted to portray and how I like to spend my own weekends. Whenever I bike through Den Bosch and the sun is out, the sound of people laughing and drinking echo through the streets, and it may be one of the biggest reasons for me to love that city. I wanted to capture that lively feeling in my painting by using a loose painting style and bright colors. Coming from Den Bosch, I had to include some references to Jeroen Bosch, the great absurdist painter from the 1400's. See if you can spot them! (and tell us in the comments)”.

“Moeraschdraak”

“I've always been enamored by the mythical folklore surrounding the origins of Den Bosch, including the one behind the city's iconic name: "The Swamp Dragon". Both my parents came from this city and told us fantastical stories about the dragon swooping in to steal all the books in the world for his magical library. Since I adore fantasy & history, I wanted to combine these interests by drawing the swamp dragon in its' environment as he's holding his golden crest. I based his design on the beautiful art nouveau style fountain that graces the plaza just in front of the central station”.

“Brabantse Horizon”

“Brabant has the most beautiful sunsets, due to the flat landscape that characterizes the Netherlands. Here in Brabant, they are made even more beautiful. On the horizon in Brabant stands the Efteling with its beautiful skyline surrounded by nature. The Efteling plays a big role in my life and therefore had to be included in my “Brabantse horizon”. The nature in this painting was inspired by the Strijbeekse heide and the Loonse and Drunense duinen. Subtle details in the sky refer to a source of Brabant pride, Vincent van Gogh. Of course, the centuries-old coat of arms of Brabant could not be missing from this horizon”.

“I really only started to fall in love with Brabant when I fell in love with a Brabander. My parents moved to a town in Brabant when I was a teenager and I had to leave the comfort of the Randstad behind. I didn’t like moving here, and stubborn teenage me even told my mom that I would never date a Brabander. Five years later I fell in love with one. We live together in Breda, a city I never found interesting, but living here with the person I love made me fall in love with the city too. The artwork shows snippets of our daily lives, maybe a little mundane, but beautiful to me”.

“Gabber Chaos”

“This cover moves away from the usual image of Brabant. Instead of Van Gogh or quiet landscapes, I chose the chaotic humor of New Kids Turbo. Fireworks, a car in a ditch, drunk friends. Loud, messy, and very recognizable in its own way”.
