For our current exhibition we asked the participating artists what paper they used for the works and why they do so.
To get more insight in the way of choosing paper here is Alberto Romero's story:
As a visual artist, I use different media to aid my artistic development. Paper has been a very prominent medium in my artistic output, sometimes as a simple support and at other times playing a leading role in the final work, as is the case here. I don’t have a favourite type of paper, as I use different papers depending on my artistic objectives. But without a doubt, the paper I’ve used in this work is one of my favourites. The seed of these works, titled Composition with Greens I and II, lies in my sketchbooks, where I record colour notes and composition studies. With the intention of exploring compositions on a larger scale, I thought I could combine several sheets to create a larger composition. The result is these works, where paint is not the sole protagonist in this story. Each composition consists of six sheets of 70gsm Midori paper, made in Japan. I have a great deal of experience with this paper through the medium of drawing, but this is the first time I have used it for painting, and my choice of it was no accident. The quality is exceptional and, despite being a very fine paper, it withstands brushstrokes perfectly. It is also a very delicate paper and the paint glides over it very smoothly. Another feature I like is that it has hardly any grain and does not add texture to my brushstrokes, which is something I really appreciate. For me, the paper in this work is just as important as the paint. My intention is not only to use the paper as a support, but also as a protagonist. I want the paper to show its personality at all times, moving and interacting with each sheet individually creating a light composition.
The 2 works in the current show are:
Composición con verdes I, 2025, 42 x 42 cm unframed, 6 sheets of paper
Composición con verdes II, 2025, 42 x 42 cm unframed, 6 sheets of paper
