We are thrilled to announce our upcoming exhibition 'Concrete Garden. Odd Emotions.' !!! -- a contemporary art exhibition featuring the paintings and installations of three Maastricht based artists with international backgrounds, hosted in a former air-raid shelter in Aachen(Aix La Chapelle).

It is an anti-realist ritual, a back and forth of abstract and abstraction - of form and figure - of the strange and the familiar. It is a play of connection and disconnect -- surely liminal.

Today we introduce to you our last artist: Marielle Yogi

My name is Marielle Yogi (1987) I work as a Painter, Photographer and Illustrator and incorporate elements of graphic design, collage work and typography into my practice.

Inspired by wherever I find myself to be in a specific moment, my painting style can be recognized through naive and quick lines and brush strokes. My studio and source of inspiration currently can be found at the Landbouwbelang in Maastricht.

My topic of interest ‘HUMANITY’ came to be the umbrella for many portrait painting projects I did over the past two years. My philosophy as an artist is to make the work speak for itself by adding a new perspective through each layer of paint.

Today we introduce to you our 7th artist: Taqwa Ali.

I am Taqwa Ali. B. (1997), from Sudan.

From the emerging movement of ‘Black art’ I draw inspiration with reference to artists such as Casi Namoda, Zandile Tshabalala and Frida Khalo.

In my work, I resemble my complex relationship with my identity. I paint in acrylic, smooth n**e figures with vibrant background colours yet an intense sensation of sadness, loss and confusion. As well as portraits of rough pastel work.

“My work is often about myself and my relation to my culture and heritage of Sudan. I try to position myself in a heritage that I am slowly detaching from the longer I live in a country such as the Netherlands where the culture differs extremely. I research within myself how such factors lead to the change in my personal identity, culture and heritage.

In 2020 I was admitted to Zuyd Hogeschool at the faculty of art. The past two years has been experimental for me as well as the art I produce. Being in an interdisciplinary field allows me to combine multiple mediums and research theories with the aim to educate and to touch upon precious topics in a visual sense.

One of the steps I took to make that dream a reality was to partake in the 2nd floor art collective at the Landbouwbelang. An open space hosting artists from different backgrounds and styles where each works individually or in collaboration with an endless inspiration for production.

I am looking forward to share the process of my artistic development and my artist identity within the art collective and beyond”

Today we introduce to you our 5th artist: Jila

My name is Jila (1992), 29 years old and living in Maastricht. I was always interested in art. Painting and photography are both of my passions. As soon as I got my first camera I dived into it. I even started studying at the art academy in Belgium.

When I got into a difficult period of my life I got in touch with IEDEREEN ANDERS (painting competition). I started expressing myself while painting, because of therapy and psychiatric help It helped me a lot and I continued painting till now.

Nowadays I have my own studio in the Landbouwbelang and I am very happy to be part of this collective in which we can stimulate each other and exchange ideas.
