Last weekend, Gallery Bonnard organised a plein air weekend in Nuenen — the village where Van Gogh once lived and worked, and where the gallery is situated. Painting there, surrounded by landscapes connected to his history, made the experience feel especially meaningful.

I have very little experience with plein air painting, but every time I do it, I’m reminded how much I enjoy it. When I paint, I become completely absorbed in the process, and painting outdoors seems to heighten that even more. The shifting light, the wind, the warmth of the sun, distant sounds — everything feels more present and intense. It is something I would love to explore further and continue developing.

During the day I made two small painting studies, while also taking time to speak with fellow artists — some with years of plein air experience, others trying it for the first time. What I especially enjoyed was seeing how differently each artist responded to the same surroundings.

The paintings created during the plein air weekend are currently on view at the Van Gogh kerkje in Nuenen during this Pinksterweekend.
