This month I'm going to make a sort of check-in on every Friday. It is mostly meant for myself, so see where I'm heading in de somewhat longer run. But maybe you can get some ideas out of it as well.

This one is on finding back my dancing boots

We came back last Saturday from our vacation that was meant to be a road trip for about 3 weeks but that ended after a week. Why? Because we're not so good at driving longer stretches anymore or maybe we just feel better at home or maybe we're getting old. Whatever the reason was that we returned earlier it was quite a disappointment from which I and my travel mates had to recover for a couple of days.

One thing that I liked though was being back in my studio. So I made a lot of stuff, mostly small drawings, scribbles and doodles. They always put me back on track, because they help me understand what actually is going on in my life and around me. I discovered that what I need in life right now is a bit more breathing space. Some of it coming from tuning down the perfectionist a bit and some from letting go all sort of 'shoulds' and tasks.

What helped me a lot this week was listening to podcasts with other artists.

I listened to some interviews with Kate Bingaman-Burt by Debbie Millman (on designmatters) and Andy Miller (on creative peptalk).

Kate Bingaman-Burt is a Professor of Grafic Design at the Portland State University. Her ideas about art are a real treat to my heart. She is all about creative freedom, creative development and about zines. These talks really helped me to get back in the driver seat of my own creativity and find my dancing boots again.

Thanks, Kate (and Debbie and Andy)

Happy Twenty Twenty

This is ‘lady 2020’! I made her on december 31. I think she represents my goals for this brandnew year. Made out of old paintings, cardboard, glue and lots of glittering goldpaint, she wants to send color and sparkles into the world as much as possible. Feel free to join her and me on our adventures on my blog, instagram and facebook.
Wishing you all a beautiful Twenty Twenty!!

I didn’t have much time yesterday, but I made these doodles. Just sketching and moving my pen randomly over the paper always gets me in the mood to do more. It keeps the spirits high. I know the Muze is still there whispering ‘çome, come’ while waiting patiently untill there is more time for me to create.

Working on big paper

I am experimenting with working on bigger sizes of paper. That makes it possible to tell more parts of a story in one picture.
What I like about the bigger size is that I can integrate all small paintings and drawings that I make all the time. Somehow they find their place in these compositions and thus acquire their meaning.
What I also like about the bigger sizes is that it easy to use a lot of different stuff and switch media and style easily. Here I used acrylic paint, acryla gouache, indian ink, markers, ball point and collage.

‘family gathering’, ca 112x62 cm

my view today

It is a beautiful day. The sky is clear and very, veryblue. I am sitting at my drawing table in the studio and look out of the window. And once again, like so many times before in these past twenty-two years, I consider myself blessed with this great place with its light and windows..
I love shadows. Here you see the shadow of my roof on the house next door. The forms and the lines change during the day and sometimes a bird can be seen sitting on top of my house.
I am not much of a reality painter but this morning I tried to get the essence of this view that I love so much.
Have a nice day, everybody!

Just a little story:

something is sitting on my head

Loud voices in my head? Oh, it is just a rooster on my head. I must be on a farm, considering the pig you can just see on the right. But that’s probably a different story.

Doodle along and wake up your creative soul

Sometimes when I don’t know what to draw, what technique to start with, or even what kind of paper I should use, I do a sort of mini-exercise. Or maybe it is more some sort of a game.
It goes a little bit like this:
I start with drawing random lines on a couple, ten, maybe fifteen, of small papers or cards (here they are 10,5 to 7,5 cm). They are quick lines (or spots) with no meaning at all. Then I put the cards around me and add things to them. The moment I hesitate with one card I immediately switch to another card en draw on that one. In the beginning it is very important for me to keep up the speed. Working fast and intuitively.
Later on the process usually slows down. That is when I start to see more pattern or meaning in the drawings. Sometimes I end op drawing, painting, reworking the cards for hours and I end up with a couple of pieces of art. Some good, some not so good. But always, yes always, my creative soul is fully awake again!
Ta dah!!!!

who is afraid of color?

Here in the Netherlands the predominant colors in interior design (home, offices, hotels and restaurants alike) and in architecture seem to be brown, gray, sometimes some beige. We have had a period of very soft pastels, so soft that they seemed more like a vaguely colored version of gray than the actual green, pink or blue that they derived from originally.
I understand that there is a place for very soft and earthy colors, which can be very calming and beautiful, but lately I have the feeling that our country is turning into a giant crematorium.
It is strange because color, real colors can give such an amount of energy. They make me happy and fill me with dancing joy.
My personal dream is that we paint our houses and interiors bold, brave and bursting with imagination. Think of what that would do to people
But maybe most of us just long for rest, maybe even for death in a way, because we demand so much of ourselves and others that we don’t want to dance anymore, or think that we don’t want that anymore. Maybe we should tune down our demands and tune up our colors.
Have a happy colorful dancing day!
