From Groningen to Maastricht and everywhere in between: over the past few days and weeks, our fantastic scouts have visited all the graduation exhibitions across the Netherlands to find work for LUNA Young Masters 2027. We have a wonderful (and extensive) longlist that we will be working on this week.

The open call for LUNA Young Masters 2027 is closed. We received an amazing number of superinteresting submissions from all over the world, such as the USA, Poland, Germany, the country of light Finland and Tunisia. The coming days, our selection committee will be studying all proposals and will have to make difficult choices. We hope to inform you about the results later this month!

From 22 January to 7 February 2027, the annual LUNA Young Masters exhibition will take place in the Stationskwartier in Leeuwarden as part of the LUNA Festival. We invite emerging and early-career artists to submit an (adaptation of an) existing media artwork.

OPEN CALL: SEE DJERBA 2026

From August 8 to 16, our Tunisian partners from Interference organize another edition of the SEE Djerba festival in the medina of Houmt Souk, the capital of Djerba island in the south of Tunisia. There is an opportunity for one artist from our region (the north of the Netherlands) to take part in the programme with an existing artwork.

SEE Djerba is an international public art festival that brings artists, places, and communities into dialogue through site-specific artistic exchange. The 2026 edition, ‘AKROS - From Encounter to Entanglement’, explores connection as an ongoing process of interaction, transformation, and interdependence.

RESIDENCY
SEE Djerba and Media Art Friesland invite one artist from our region (north of the Netherlands) to join the festival for a one-week residency. We offer:
- Travel & stay;
- Participation in festival activities like discussions, workshops, excursions;
- Material costs for the presentation of an existing artwork;
- A small fee in line with the Dutch guideline for artists’ fees.

LUNA YOUNG MASTERS 2027

From 22 January to 7 February 2027, the annual LUNA Young Masters exhibition will take place in the Stationskwartier in Leeuwarden as part of the LUNA Festival. We invite emerging and early-career artists to submit an (adaptation of an) existing media artwork.

Selected artists will have the opportunity to present their work to a broad audience during the exhibition. In addition, LUNA offers professional guidance throughout the process leading up to the exhibition and organizes networking opportunities with professionals from the field during the festival.

Media Art Friesland is looking forward to visiting Image Beyond Beyond the Screen International in Lille, the event dedicated to the video mapping industry, attended by the greatest names in the field.

Of course, we will visit the third edition of the VMF residency, that focuses on the question of REPresentativity. Conceived as an open and transversal theme, it allows for an exploration of both artistic practice’s broader questions of inclusion. The residency invited artists, curators, and producers to critically engage with issues of visibility, power, and narration, while remaining attentive to gendered and geopolitical perspectives.

OPEN CALL MIRAKEL
A few more days to submit your work

From 11 - 20 December, 2026, the beautiful estate of Fraeylemaborg (Slochteren) and Media Art Friesland organise the light art festival MIRAKEL. To all emerging artists from the northern parts of the Netherlands and Germany: you have till March 27 to submit your project. Selected works will be presented for ten day in the monumental park.

OPEN CALL MIRAKEL - TWO MORE WEEKS
Light art festival on the Fraeylemaborg Estate, 11-20 Dec. 2026

Two more weeks to send us your submissions for the Mirakel light art festival. The beautiful Fraeylemaborg Estate in Slochteren and Media Art Friesland are organizing this event, that takes place from December 11th to 20th, 2026. Through this open call, we invite emerging artists from the Northern parts of The Netherlands and Germany to submit their light art projects. Selected works will be presented for ten days in the monumental park.

– Selection announcement: April 20, 2026
– Presentation: December 11-20, 2026

VINCENT WESTRA
Residency Vinterlys '27

Frisian artist Vincent Westra was invited for a two-week residency at the Media Art Days of Vinterlys. He researched how his work ‘Cry of Light’ – that Media Art Friesland presented in Sneek en Leeuwarden the last couple of months – relates to the forest. The conclusion was clear: Vincent thought the work found it’s natural habitat in Denmark. Besides that, he had a great time alongside inspiring artists and exchanged ideas and practices. In 2027 ‘Cry of Light’ will return to Vinterlys festival for a nine-day presentation.

TEXT ME 2026 - THE ESSAYS

The eight international TEXT ME-participants and project leader Alice Conforti enjoyed a beautiful nad intense international development program at Media Art Friesland during LUNA 2026. During and after TEXT ME, each of the participants wrote a text (some participants even two) about one of the artworks from the Young Masters exhibition.
