Root Gallery

Root Gallery Contemporary art gallery based in Krimpen aan de Lek, Netherlands Root Gallery started out as a small art gallery with big ambitions.

Built on collaboration, trust and mutual support, the gallery now represents a new generation of Dutch contemporary artists working in different disciplines and crossovers. It is fully committed to the development of ambitious and special programming, while in depth research into material and its qualities, colour, composition and concept are always at the base. Though consistent in their practice

, the artists continue to seek out new pathways, develop further and innovate. Moving to the current location, which offers exciting opportunities for showcasing, has accelerated this process. Large installation works in the centre of the gallery space are alternated and combined with (smaller) wall sculptures, paintings and prints. This way, spectators are able to connect with the same artistic practices in different ways. Root Gallery works hard on the exposure of its represented artists by participating in national as well as international art fairs and exhibitions throughout the whole year. It is also invested in building long term relationships by facilitating continuous communication with artists, collectors, visitors and (international) partners.

Since the beginning of this year, has been introducing increasingly transparent materials into her work.
These materials are not transparent when she applies them. They appear white at first, only gradually revealing themselves as the work dries. The painting becomes visible to Karen herself over time.

It marks a clear shift from her earlier paintings. Where previous works often developed from fluid paint and large amounts of water, these new pieces are built with much thicker materials, almost resembling gels or pastes.

The result is a group of works with a distinctly physical presence, somewhere between painting and object.

Perhaps that is why people often have the same reaction when seeing these works for the first time: they almost want to touch them.

We recently added several works from Karen van de Vliet's new Translucent series to the gallery.

The longer you look, the more you notice.

Layers of coloured glass, reflections, and copper gradually reveal themselves in the work of .snel . As the light changes, so do the sculptures.

For Crystal Clear, Snel takes an everyday copper cleaning sponge as her starting point, transforming a familiar object into works that invite a slower way of looking.

Currently on view at Root Gallery as part of Invitation II.
Until 11 July.

The outcome remains uncertain.

For , the photograph is the result of an intensified process of building, observing, positioning and photographing.

Starting from a simple set-up, the interaction between light and space is continuously observed. Elements are adjusted when necessary, while the camera position remains dynamic, changing in relation to moving daylight and the frequent repositioning of the structures.

In other words, the space is created in a situation where all aspects are variables and in constant flux. The outcome remains uncertain until the photographs are evaluated afterwards.

The portrait above shows Jan Theun among the temporary structures that form the basis of his work. Spaces that once physically existed, large enough to step into, had you been there at the time.

Jan Theun van Rees' work is currently on view at Root Gallery as part of What Holds.

On view until 11 July.

How is contemporary glass art made?

What appears delicate and effortless is often the result of years of experimentation, technical skill, and countless decisions that remain invisible in the finished work.

For her series Crystal Clear, .snel combines glass and copper, transforming an everyday cleaning sponge into sculptural works. The glass is blown in Leerdam, long considered the centre of Dutch glassmaking, where collaboration remains an essential part of the centuries-old craft.

Using Francisca's work as a starting point, we recently published a new journal article exploring the role of material research, craftsmanship, and glassblowing in contemporary sculpture.

Crystal Clear is currently on view at Root Gallery as part of Invitation II.

On view until 11 July.

This photograph, Wild Space by , is part of the ongoing Painted Room series, in which temporary spaces are constructed using painted strips of textile.

Natural daylight plays an essential role in the work. As the light changes throughout the day, shadows shift across the installation, creating relationships between colour, form and space that are unique to a specific moment and location.

For this work, the process of building, observing, positioning and photographing was taken a step further. The installation began as a simple arrangement and was continuously adjusted in response to changing light conditions. The camera position changed alongside it, resulting in an image that emerged from a situation in which every element remained in motion.

The work is available in an edition of 3 and measures 125 x 94,5 cm. It is presented in a smoked oak frame with museum glass, allowing the subtle details and tonal shifts within the photograph to remain clearly visible.

Part of the exhibition What Holds, on view until 11 July.

"Leather is a material you can guide, but never fully control."

That idea sits at the core of Madelon's practice.

Working with leftover leather sourced from the high-fashion industry, creates sculptural works inspired by structures found in nature. Leaf veins, textures and organic patterns form the starting point for a process in which intuition and craftsmanship play an equally important role.

After extensive experimentation with different materials, she found what she was looking for in leather: a material that combines strength with flexibility, structure with movement. At the same time, leather remains unpredictable. It can be shaped and guided, but never fully controlled. That dialogue between artist and material is present in every work.

By magnifying details that often go unnoticed, Madelon invites us to slow down and look more closely at the natural world around us. Her ambition is to create works that evoke the same sense of wonder found in nature itself, transforming small, overlooked structures into immersive experiences.

Madelon's work is currently on view at Root Gallery as part of What Holds.

On view until 11 July.
Open every Friday and Saturday, 13:00 – 17:00.

🍸 On Saturday 30 May, we open What Holds, featuring new works by , and .

For this exhibition, Jan Theun presents works from his recent series Painted Room. Rather than photographing existing interiors, he constructs temporary spaces himself - built from simple materials, light and painted surfaces - that only exist for the duration of the photograph.

The resulting images move somewhere between photography, architecture and illusion. Spaces that feel strangely familiar, yet impossible to fully place.

✨️ We would love to welcome you on Saturday afternoon. Drinks will be served, the artists will be present, and new works will be shown throughout the gallery.

Alongside the upcoming exhibition What Holds, one wall is dedicated to Invitation, a recurring presentation for guest artists. This edition presents new work by .snel.

As an artist, Francisca explores the constantly changing relationship between people and their environment. By using accessible materials and recognisable concepts, she challenges existing perceptions and encourages viewers to look more closely at the world around them.

In her work Crystal Clear, the starting point is a copper cleaning sponge, an object that is virtually invisible in everyday life. It symbolises labour that is rarely acknowledged or appreciated.

Opening
30.05.2026
15:00 – 18:00

On view until 11 July.
