What is the power of illustration?
As one of the visitors of the Illustratie Biënnale 2026 expressed in response to this question

“Imagination. By literally visualising things, you delve deeper, broaden your horizons, inspire yourself, learn to see with fresh eyes, to seek, to find and to express yourself throughout the creative journey, which in turn leads you back to sharing and connecting.”

Some weekends stay with you for a long time. The eighth edition of the Illustratie Biënnale, held on 6 and 7 June 2026 at Schuur Haarlem, was one of those weekends. For two days, makers, students, designers, researchers and visitors came together to look, draw, listen and above all: meet each other.
On Saturday 6 June, the speaker programme opened with nine illustrators sharing their creative processes, inspirations and the many different forms illustration can take.

Guus Møystad kicked the day off with a unique combination of performance, illustration and storytelling. Inspired by a Norwegian myth, he brought together politics, history, fantasy and personal experiences in a living comic that blurred the boundaries between image and narrative.

Annemarie van Haeringen shared how coincidence plays an important role in her creative process.

Unexpected discoveries and spontaneous ideas are not distractions, but opportunities that can lead her work in new directions.

Inge van Noortwijk invited the audience to look more closely at the world around us.✏️

From virtuoso picture books to data illustration, from ceramics to social cartography: the Illustratie Biënnale showed that illustration is much more than a technique. It is a way to tell stories, reveal connections and look at the world from new perspectives.

Unieke kans om met de Indiase storytelling Patachitra masterclass mee te doen op 7 juni in de Schuur.

Swarna Chitrakar is een gerenommeerde Patachitra-kunstenaar uit West-Bengalen in India, die haar leven heeft gewijd aan het behoud en de verdere ontwikkeling van deze traditionele kunstvorm van rolschilderijen.
Haar onderwerp is de vrouwenemancipatie. Deze verhalen vertelt zij nog steeds op traditionele wijze op markten, scholen en binnen organisaties.
Haar werk heeft zowel in India als internationaal erkenning gekregen. Swarna’s heeft ook veel jonge kunstenaars in haar gemeenschap geïnspireerd om hun culturele erfgoed te omarmen. Je leert de basisprincipe van deze vertelkunst en via Live stream verbinding zal Lipika Bansal samen met Swarna enkele projecten toelichten.

During the Illustration Biennale, you can join an in-depth portfolio review session on 7 June from 15:00 until 17:00 at De Schuur in Haarlem. This is a unique opportunity to discuss your work with professionals from the field, gain new insights, and expand your network.

Meet and exchange ideas with Noa Zuidervaart (Artistic Director of Drawing Centre Diepenheim and visual artist), Masha Krasnova-Shabaeva (illustrator and visual artist), Olivia Twist (illustrator from London), or Malin Gyllensvaan and Cecilia Pettersson (pattern designers from Sweden).

Whether you’re just starting out or have been working professionally for years, you may be surprised by the doors that a fresh perspective can open!

Carlijn Kingma 💥
Grote maatschappelijke thema’s als de woningcrisis en de financiële wereld vertaalt zij naar gedetailleerde, architectonische tekeningen waarin alles met alles verbonden is 🖋️
Met eindeloos veel fijne lijnen en structuren maakt ze complexe systemen zichtbaar en navolgbaar—als kaarten van een werkelijkheid die vaak ondoorgrondelijk lijkt. Haar werk nodigt uit om te dwalen, te ontdekken en zelf verbanden te leggen.
Ze werkt nauw samen met onderzoekers en combineert artistieke verbeelding met een stevig theoretisch fundament. Haar werk werd bekroond met o.a. de Dutch Design Award en de Amsterdamprijs voor de Kunst
In 2023 werd haar werk Waterworks of Money samen met de serie Utopias geselecteerd voor het Nederlandse paviljoen op de Architectuurbiënnale in Venetië

Olivia Twist 💥
Alledaagse momenten en vluchtige gebaren vormen de kern van haar werk—van mensen in de bus tot jongeren op straat. Met haar illustraties geeft ze zichtbaarheid en waardigheid aan verhalen die vaak onopgemerkt blijven.
In een krachtige, grafische stijl—geïnspireerd op houtdruk en linosnede—werkt ze met dikke, inktachtige lijnen en levendige kleurvlakken.
Olivia Twist studeerde in Londen en haar werk is te zien in o.a. het Museum of London.

Everyday moments and fleeting gestures form the heart of her work—from people on the bus to young people on the street. Through her illustrations, she gives visibility and dignity to stories that often go unnoticed.
In a powerful, graphic style—inspired by woodcut and linocut—she works with thick, ink-like lines and vibrant blocks of colour.
Olivia Twist studied in London and her work is on display at venues including the Museum of London.
