In this video I'm explaining 'chiaroscuro'. An italian word meaning 'light-dark'. Others may also know it as 'clair obscure'. In the background you can see me working on my new project "the girl with the earrings". I'm using white to create a bigger contrast -> chiaroscuro.

In this video you can see how i'm setting up the base of the collar. For this i'm using a mix of the colour raw umber and a paint thickener I call 'putty'. If you want to know how I made the putty, you can look a few videos back! 👩‍🎨

If you look at old masters portrets, you will see that it is lighter around their subject. That makes it pop out! So it doesn't dissapear in the background. đŸ˜Ļ👩‍🎨
