Baltan Laboratories Baltan Laboratories is a cultural indisciplinary lab focusing on societal issues Baltan Laboratories is a cultural indisciplinary lab based in Eindhoven.

We focus on societal issues through a relational approach, creating spaces to rehearse living otherwise. We believe that the increasing complexity of our world and of the challenges we have to face no longer allows for a strictly disciplinary, reductionist and western-based approach. In a world full of uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity, the interactions and exchanges between different discipli

nes are fundamental to achieving a relational approach that responds to the environmental, political, social, economic and technological issues we must address today. We can no longer divide a problem into its parts, deal with those in separate disciplines and then recompose them in a solution. Disciplines separate those considered qualified to think from those who are not; for this reason, we rather focus on indisciplinarity: an approach which transgresses disciplinary boundaries to achieve intellectual emancipation and evades disciplinary specialism and hierarchisation. Indisciplinarity is not undisciplined. It opposes what, in the discipline, limits the process of discovery and the free movement of serendipity. That means that we shouldn’t get rid of disciplines but instead design ways for their borders to be more permeable and for a new collaboration attitude to emerge. We try to achieve this attitude by designing learning trajectories, projects and collaborations that bridge different ways of knowing (not just the artistic and the scientific ones) through creative strategies, including embodied, sensory, intuitive and performative techniques. The core of an indisciplinary approach is de-organizing knowledge, temporarily dismantling how it operates to reveal that we are not really touching the complexity of reality but just scraping the layers of abstractions that we put on it to feel in control. In this way, we can become aware of some of the assumptions and ideologies that shape our understanding and action in the world, especially the hegemonic ones that become natural, automatic, unconscious and apparently unquestionable. We acknowledge the importance of creating a non-hierarchical and safe space where people from all kinds of social, ethnic, discipline, and cultural backgrounds can talk to each other on an equal and non-judgemental level. We strive to include diverse knowledges and value systems in our projects and collaborations, not relying solely on a western perspective.

The Elephant in the Waiting Room brings together artists, writers, and creatives from different disciplines and nationalities, posing them a challenge: to write about the technological revolution of the near future—whether for better or worse, tomorrow or a hundred years from now.

This collection of 10 science fiction stories do not address the theme of imminent disaster, but rather the ways in which we anticipate or overcome it.
For this reason, the cover design leaves a list of possible catastrophes that orbit around it in an endless doomscroll; yet they remain on the surface, without determining the stories contained within. This almost counters a widespread trend in science fiction that turns the “pornography of catastrophe” and its spectacle into entertainment. Our authors are not interested in the gruesome details of events themselves, but in the myriad ways we influence them and are, in turn, influenced by them.

Valerio Arsenio is a 21st Century Alchemist | Raise Your Voice at Van Abbehuis

Experience the result of Valerio’s artistic fellowship at Van Abbehuis

Altro Oltre | Monday, 13th April till Wednesday 15th April | Opening Hours: 13:00-17:00h 🫆

Project description:

Valerio’s project Altro Oltre explores images and shapes as carriers of meaning and considers narrative as a structure that does not depend on language. It examines how visual interpretation draws on shared symbolic conventions while remaining open to contextual shift, and how narrative logic can be enacted through sequences of forms, images, and interfaces rather than told through words.
The work takes the form of a series of sculptures created through digital and physical modelling. These objects translate fable logic into physical structures characterised by condensation, ambiguity, signal, and threshold.

About the artist:

Valerio is a Belgian-Italian artist and designer based in the Netherlands whose work explores digital sculpture and object design. His practice investigates systems, iteration and the ways forms emerge when digital manipulation meets the physical world. Through 3D printing and other digital fabrication processes, he tests the limits of material and perception, creating objects that shift between the virtual and the tangible.

Yi Zhang and Eshwari Ramsali are 21st Century Alchemists | Raise Your Voice at Van Abbehuis

Join us for a workshop and mixer experiences with our Raise Your Voice Fellows, Yi Zhang and Eshwari Ramsali in April!

Monday, 13th April, 17:00-20:00h | Invasive Remedy: Workshop by Yi Zhang & Eshwari Ramsali 🍵

This reflective, hands-on session invites participants to explore healing practices as mutual aid using plants often labeled as invasive. Together, we will create tinctures, ferments, and salves, and discuss safe foraging techniques transforming “unwanted” plants into ‘healer’ kin. Through these gestures we will turn narratives of exclusion into gestures of care.

Wednesday, 15th April, 19:00-21:00h | Misery Mixer during Cafe Wednesday 🥂

Join a dystopian party exploring the grief of alienation by creating and sharing fermented medicinal bracers. Between shots, engage in group readings, and share stories.

About the artists:

Yi (she/they) is an interdisciplinary artist-researcher based in Eindhoven, working across video, installation, drawing, cooking, fermentation and performance. Their research explores the entangled influences of human trade on urban ecosystems, the migration experiences of human and non-human beings, and their displacement under capitalist systems.

Eshwari (they/she) is an Amsterdam-based speculative artist, researcher, bartender, web-tender and pot-stirrer. As a first-generation migrant, they are interested in mapping the cosmology of the Other(s) and the ways in which hospitality, generosity, reciprocity, and vulnerability are negotiated in the margins.

For more information on the events, visit our website!

Mikolaj Stojanowicz is a 21st Century Alchemist | Raise Your Voice at Van Abbehuis

Join Raise Your Voice fellow Miko in two rituals at Van Abbehuis this April.

Tuesday, 14th April, 19:00-21:00h | Dark Wood 🪾

Dark Wood is a live, articipatory ritual that invites you into a magic circle, a bounded space where ordinary rules dissolve, and a different logic takes hold. Guided by a repetitive mantra, you will be invited to approach charcoal covered scrolls and begin to erase. Rather than a conscious imposition of an image, you converse with the grain of the charcoal, the noise of the material, which reveals hidden patterns under the surface.

Wednesday 15th April, 17:00-19:00h | Syntax of the Unconscious ✂️

Syntax of the Unconscious is a hands-on exploration of how we can become aware of our awareness. Participants will be guided through experiments in cut-ups and the repetition of mantra as a tool for focusing awareness. No prior experience is needed, only curiosity and a willingness to play.

About the artist:

Mikolaj is a visual artist and researcher whose work is an exploration of inner/outer transformation through alchemical processes and embodied practice. Working across media and disciplines, he develops methods of “cartography of the unconscious”, using materials like charcoal, paint and code to map landscapes underneath the surface. His work is grounded in magickal thought, depth psychology, and a commitment to process as the core artistic gesture.

Raise Your Voice is kindly supported by Creative Industries Fund NL
