What does it mean to experience time beyond the clock?

For curator and MU director Angelique Spaninks, Metabolising Time is an invitation to think about time differently: not as something linear, efficient, and always moving faster, but as something cyclical, layered, and deeply physical.

There’s the deep time of the Earth, the rhythms of biology, the timescales of evolution, and then there’s technological time, constantly speeding things up. All these different forms of time coexist, overlap, and, ultimately, pass through us.

At MU, Metabolising Time brings these different temporalities together, from processes unfolding over millions of years to the accelerated pace of the present.

𝙋𝙡𝙖𝙮𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙇𝙤𝙣𝙜 𝙂𝙖𝙢𝙚: 𝘼𝙧𝙩, 𝙀𝙭𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝘼𝙄

Artist, writer and AI pioneer K Allado-McDowell ( ) brings together art, ecology and AI. They were one of the driving forces behind Google’s Artists + Machine Intelligence programme in 2015, have co-authored several books with GPT-3, and were an editor of The Atlas of Anomalous AI.

Artist Marjolijn Dijkman ( ) similarly transforms her often far-reaching, multidisciplinary research into compelling installations and series of works that move between fact and fiction, revealing hidden stories about power, knowledge and ecological change.

On Thursday evening, 10 September, both artists will come to MU Hybrid Art House for a talk about their practices and the works on view in the exhibition Metabolising Time.

The intelligent machines Jacco Gardner is using for ALTERITY offer a different vision of what the relationship between humans and machines could look like: more transparent, more collaborative, and more rooted in the here and now. His first four live sessions during Hit the City have demonstrated that collaboration with machines also comes with a certain degree of unpredictability, with each performance turning out completely different in pace and atmosphere. Jacco’s instruments are currently performing ALTERITY at MU entirely by themselves, without ever repeating the same performance twice.

On September 18, Jacco will return to MU to perform ALTERITY live with his machines once more, as part of De Nacht van Strijp-S. So mark your calendars and come by to find out what they come up with together.

Captured through video game first-person point of view, Deep Time Null Value by Palestinian artist Firas Shehadeh ( .shehade ) journeys across a devastated landscape, layering narrated diary entries from an apocalyptic event.

Systems of surveillance scan, map, and classify the earth’s surface, turning life into data, target, and resource. Yet beneath this surface, the Dead Sea and Jordan Valley hold another intelligence: sediment, salt, dormant microbial life, and indigenous bacteria, ancient forms that persist outside the database and beyond the colonial grid.

Here, dormancy becomes resistance: a mode of survival that refuses the tempo of empire.

Deep Time Null Value is part of the exhibition Metabolising Time, on show now at MU until September 20.

ALTERITY by Jacco Gardner the City

With a unique collection of early sound recorders, “intelligent instruments”, computers and synthesizers, artist, musician and media archaeologist Jacco Gardner will perform several live performances during Hit the City at MU. These instruments were built by people who treated the machine as a genuine other, unpredictable and collaborative, without the need to control it or be controlled by it. This attempt was short-lived and has largely been forgotten, but Gardner lovingly dusts it off and explores it anew. The result is a machine that he plays, but also plays with him.

For curator Alexander Burenkov ( )collaboration is at the heart of the curatorial process. Working alongside people with different backgrounds and perspectives creates room to exchange knowledge, challenge ideas and discover unexpected connections and, importantly, to find like-minded thinkers along the way.

This approach shaped the exhibition Metabolising Time, where four curators came together to develop an exhibition with fourteen international artists. Their different perspectives meet in a shared exploration of time: cyclical, repetitive, embodied, ancestral, geological, more-than-human and everything in between.

In Between the Lines, Marjolijn Dijkman combines drone footage, LiDAR scans, historical photographs and close-ups of bark marked by beetle traces to explore the landscape around Verdun, still haunted by an estimated 12–15 million unexploded WWI shells.

After the war, millions of Norway spruces were planted to densely reforest the contaminated, uninhabitable land. A century later, scorching summers gave the European spruce bark beetle the perfect conditions to take over, killing the trees.

The result is a landscape shaped by war, industrial forestry and the climate crisis, where the past keeps resurfacing in unexpected ways.

Between the Lines is on show at MU as part of Metabolising Time.

🧠 What does it mean to metabolise time?

Rather than thinking of time as something we measure by the clock, sell, or reduce to numbers, curator Marijn Bril ( )approaches it as something we experience through our bodies. For her, this idea manifests across humans and non-humans, living and non-living matter, and through states of being such as growth, ageing, change, death and decay.

In Metabolising Time, four curators, each working from a different perspective, bring together the work of thirteen international artists who explore how time is experienced, shaped and felt. Experience these different and sometimes conflicting ways of relating to time for yourself at MU this summer.

The 5000-year-old mummy Ötzi has been subjected to an almost unparalleled regime of archaeological intimacy. The scholarly gaze has proven so voracious that even the contents of his stomach and intestines have been examined.

Artist Levi van Gelder ( ) proposes a radically undisciplined counter-archive. In this speculative fan fiction, Ötzi undergoes a minor yet consequential rebrand as Ötza: no longer the object of forensic extraction but the fabulist, diva, and unreliable narrator of her own existence. Ötza refuses the fantasy of archaeological objectivity, repossessing a body that has spent five millennia being explained by everyone except herself.
