CASA Vertigo is pleased to invite you to Theoria: Towards a Beautiful Vocabulary of Design, the farewell exhibition of Jacob Voorthuis.

The exhibition presents the philosophical project that has shaped his work for decades, exploring how words, images, and concepts can support the architectural design process and help us give clearer reasons for the decisions we make.

📍 Exhibition: Plaza Vertigo, TU Eindhoven
🗓️ From October 15 to November 27
🗣️ Opening on October 15, 2026 from 17:00 to 18:30 in the Trappenzaal, with a talk by Jacob Voorthuis on the ideas behind the installation.

Join us to explore Theoria and engage with a vocabulary of design shaped through philosophy, architecture, and critical reflection.

Congratulations to all twenty graduates, who spent their final year addressing housing, democracy, heritage, inclusion and the habitability of the planet. The quality, breadth and seriousness of purpose on display were remarkable, as were the ambition and care behind each project. The jury thanks the graduates, their supervisors and the TU/e Department of the Built Environment for making this selection possible.

From this strong field, CASA vertigo is proud to announce the four nominees that will represent the TU/e in this year’s national Archiprix competition:

The Death and Life of Urban Viaducts by Daan Hegeman
Critical Spatial Practice by Sean Hendley
The Inverted Monument by Annemijn Smulders
Structures of Moments by Juultje van der Linden

These projects, together with the work of all their fellow graduates, can be seen in the final week of the exhibition in Plaza Vertigo. We invite everyone to stop by and take a closer look.

CASA Vertigo is pleased to invite you to the Architecture EHV 2026, an exhibition showing the best graduation projects in architecture and urbanism. In this year’s graduation projects, almost nothing starts from nothing, and almost nothing stays at one scale. The projects share the conviction that architecture is at its most ambitious not when it starts over, but when it takes responsibility for what has been there before.

📍Exhibition: Plaza Vertigo, TU Eindhoven
🗓️From January 26 to March 6
🗣️On September 24 at 17:00, the announcement of this year’s Archiprix nominees’ selection will take place in the Trappenzaal, Vertigo. During the event, we will reflect and discuss the multitude of projects and themes explored by the graduating class of 2026.

THE EMBASSY OF EMPHATY

This project explores the architectural design of an embassy for the transgender community. The building was conceived to; ‘evoke awareness in the fluid, individual exploration of gender identity, informed by the concept of nudging, while incorporating symbolic meaning’.

The resulting design provides safety, guidance and support, while also preparing its (transgender) users to re-enter society with new insights and confidence.

Through a carefully designed (spatial) trajectory, transgender individuals are paired with Luxembourgian citizens. Based on the principals of the contact hypothesis, positive interactions between these two groups are created. Initial hesitation, prejudice and discomfort gradually give way to cooperation, familiarity and empathy. In this way, the embassy encourages mutual understanding without trying to impose opinions and experiences on its users.

Ultimately, the project demonstrates how architecture can actively facilitate social inclusion, support personal transformation and foster dialogue between a marginalized community and the society of which it is part.

‘T HOOL REVISITED: BALANCING HERITAGE, RESIDENTS’ NEEDS AND FUTURE POSSIBILITIES

This project explores how the architectural qualities of ‘t Hool can be preserved while allowing for future change. Recognized as a significant example of Dutch post-war housing, the neighborhood embodies a clear relationship between urban structure, architecture, and historical social ideals.

The project treats ‘t Hool as both heritage and a living environment shaped by changing resident needs. Through spatial analysis, historical research, and resident input, it highlights the lasting value of its ensemble layout, green spaces, and threshold-based design. Simultaneously, it addresses tensions caused by individualization and ongoing transformations.

By applying principles such as support and infill, the project suggests targeted interventions that enable adaptation without sacrificing the legibility of the original design. In doing so, it presents ‘t Hool not as a static monument, but as a resilient structure capable of evolving while preserving its architectural identity.

HOUSING BEYONG THE INDIVIDUAL: COLLABORATIVE HOUSING, A RESPONSE TO THE HOUSING CRISIS

The Dutch housing market is under significant pressure. Affordable homes are scarce, while many existing homes no longer meet the needs of today’s households. Starters, single-person households, and older people in particular struggle to find suitable housing. Housing Beyond the Individual explores how collaborative living can respond to these challenges.

Collaborative housing combines private homes with shared spaces, facilities, and responsibilities, encouraging residents to contribute to their living environment. Besides affordability, it can promote social interaction, community, and social cohesion.

The research focuses on Roermond, a medium-sized municipality where demand for smaller, affordable homes is increasing, alongside the growth of single-person households and loneliness. Through case studies, policy and literature research, resident surveys, and spatial analysis, the study develops an urban design for the Spoorzone.

The masterplan proposes an inclusive, car-free residential area with different forms of collaborative housing around shared green courtyards. The research demonstrates that collaborative living can support affordability, social cohesion, and a more sustainable, future-proof city.

TRANSFORMING INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE

The former Ferro complex in Rotterdam, a vacant enamel factory and telescopic gas holder, has stood empty since 2007. Its characteristic open halls, the imposing concrete silo, and the immense circular dome carry decades of industrial use and abandonment. This research asks how a building like this can be transformed while preserving its character.

Rather than approaching the building through drawings alone, this project begins with phenomenological research: describing each space as experienced through the body, identifying the spatial qualities that make it what it is before proposing changes. Those descriptions become the foundation for a design that transforms the complex into an innovation hub for Rotterdam’s M4H district, housing start-up companies, educational institutions, and shared laboratories.

The character of the building is continued rather than replaced. Old and new coexist as legible layers, and the industrial logic of the original structure remains the most powerful presence in every space.

ECO-MOSAN

This project explores how critical regionalism can be reinterpreted within a low-carbon building practice within the context of Maastricht. The thesis aims to mediate Maastricht’s building traditions with an architecture and new material culture that respects planetary boundaries. It explores the relation between architecture that is well situated, evokes a strong sense of place, and is made from locally sourced materials.

To do this, Eco-Mosan critically redefines the typical townhouse and urban block of Maastricht. Central to this research are the local materials found in the region, as well as the architectural principles of the Maastricht townhouse.

The proposed urban strategy collectivizes the private courtyards, linking the blocks interior with the public street. At the building scale, the project proposes a structural system of oak and local marlstone. The typological principles are reinterpreted in a family of six dwelling types, and the facades are reimagined in rammed earth.

ENTRE LES VOIX: A POLYPHONIC ARCHITECTURE

Entre les voix – a polyphonic architecture explores how architecture can support social cohesion in a superdiverse and socially fragmented Brussels without reducing difference to a single collective identity. The project develops a polyphonic framework of six spatial voices (activity, anonymity, connectedness, continuity, recognition and safety) organised through layers of exposure, negotiation and withdrawal.

Applied to the former Grand Hospice, this framework transforms an introverted care complex into a more open and adaptable urban structure. New entrances, a continuous ground floor, lightweight public extensions and collective housing create varied conditions for encounter, participation, retreat and everyday coexistence. Rather than prescribing how people should live together, the project accommodates different needs and degrees of proximity. The project argues that architecture cannot guarantee social cohesion, but can create careful spatial conditions in which it may become possible.
