Vorige week las ik dat in mijn woonplaats een 12-jarige jongen overleden was aangetroffen in een woning, naar nu wordt vermoed door huiselijk geweld. Ik was behoorlijk geschrokken van het idee dat zoiets verschrikkelijks in je directe omgeving kan gebeuren.

Toen ik de week erop mijn pianolessen gaf, kwam een van mijn leerlingen niet opdagen. Dat vond ik vreemd, want hij was er altijd. Later kreeg ik een bericht van zijn vader dat zijn zoon helaas was overleden. Toen ik zijn naam opzocht, bleek het onvoorstelbare waar: de overleden jongen was een van mijn leerlingen, Zaïd.

Zaïd was een ontzettend vriendelijke, slimme en leergierige jongen. Het was mooi om te zien hoe snel hij zich de pianolessen eigen maakte. En hij viel op meer gebieden op: hij won een tekenwedstrijd voor de voorkant van het Sjors Creatief-boekje, met daarin sportieve en creatieve activiteiten voor kinderen.

Op de foto krijgt Zaïd daarvoor een prijs uitgereikt door de wethouder. Via datzelfde boekje kwam hij uiteindelijk ook bij mij terecht.

De gedachte dat hij nooit meer bij mij achter de piano zal zitten en zijn lessenreeks nooit zal afmaken, vind ik in- en intriest. Twaalf jaar oud. 💔

Rust zacht, Zaïd. Je was verdomme zo goed bezig.

Ik wens zijn vader, zijn familie en iedereen die van hem hield heel veel sterkte met dit enorme verlies. 🙏

🎹 Bill Evans completely changed harmonic reality.

His harmonic language is rich, sophisticated, and highly refined, yet his music still feels remarkably natural and direct. How did he achieve that?

In this preview, I explore some of the core elements of Evans' musical DNA:
✓ Functional harmony and the use of pivot chords
✓ Chromatic voice leading in practice
✓ Disguised dominant functions and sus chords
✓ Structural devices such as added bars that subtly increase the emotional intensity of a composition

Using examples from B Minor Waltz, we'll explore how Evans could transform the harmonic landscape while keeping the melodic material surprisingly simple.

Residing in a sterile Dropbox folder, I found this track that features Marco Kegel on alto saxophone and yours truly on piano, performing a spontaneious rendition that pays tribute to Bill Evans 'Waltz for Debby'. It was screaming: '𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗺𝗲!'

This live jazz recording captures the essence of a remarkable performance, reminiscent of the cool jazz era.
