Wonderful day visiting Delft, including the Princenhof Museum that’s currently showing the work of the homeboy Bram Bogart (1921-2012) in a show entitled ‘Schilder van Formaat’. The artist spent most of his life in Paris and Belgium where he was part of the Modern art scene, associated with Cobra developing his unique oueuvre of heavy impasto works that blend sculpture and painting. The exhibition also included 2 blue and white ceramic works… afterall, this is Delft!

Pre-birthday escape to Germany where I visited the magnificent Hamburger Kunsthalle. It is one of the largest art museums in the country and consists of three connected buildings, dating from 1869, 1921 and 1997, located in the Altstadt district between the Hauptbahnhof and the two Alster lakes… and with breathtaking views across the waters.

Lots of incredible German Expressionist art and some great contemporary art exhibitions too!

Highlights:
Images 2,3: Emile Nolde paintings
Image 4: Wilhelm Lehmbruck terracotta busy of a young woman looking over her shoulder (1913-14)
and Thomas Schütte’s United Enemies of 1993 (and modelled from Fimo!) that refers to political corruption and greed.

Last weekend to see Morten Løbner Espersen & Yoon Seok-hyeon’s exhibitions - they close on 8 May.

Espersen experiments with multiple glazes to develop rich textures and palettes, as evidenced in his Magic Mushrooms, (1st image).

The first solo-exhibition byYoon Seok-hyeon: Ott/ Another paradigmic ceramic, engages with issues of circular economy through the use of a natural lacqer called Ott.

My son, and I had the privilege of attending the opening of the AWESOME new exhibition of Petrit Halilaj 10 days ago. It’s an exquisite show, and so well worth a trip to . Petrit Halilaj was born in 1986 in Kosovo. His works frequently refer to the country’s recent history and the political and cultural tensions in the region. Halilaj draws on intimate, personal experiences, but his work also touches on broader social issues such as freedom and identity, the (re)valuation of stories, and LGBTQI+ rights. In this exhibition featuring his evocative installations, Halilaj returns to his native soil: the village of Runik in Kosovo.

I love unique towers and on a hasty road trip to France, yesterday, had to stop to explore the Zimmer tower (Dutch: Zimmertoren) in Lier, Belgium, also known as the Cornelius tower, that was originally a keep of Lier's 14th-century city fortifications. In 1930, astronomer and clockmaker Louis Zimmer (1888–1970) built the Jubilee (or Centenary) Clock, which is displayed on the front of the tower, and consists of 12 clocks encircling a central one with 57 dials. These clocks showed time on all continents, phases of the moons, times of tides and many other periodic phenomena.

More highlights from outstanding women artists featured at the … a pair of giant ghostly figures by Sandra Mujinga. Born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, she now resides in Berlin and Oslo. Last year the artist won the Preis der Nationalgalerie (National Gallery Prize), Germany's most prestigious contemporary art award. In case you’re wondering about the green light, it’s a part of the work - not me playing with filters!

A highlight of the is the New Zealand pavilion by the Yuki Kihara’s ensemble entitled Paradise Camp, curated by Natalie King.

“Yuki, being the first Pacific, Asian and Fa’afafine artist to represent Aotearoa at the prestigious Venice Biennale, has gifted the New Zealand arts community with an incredible moment to cherish.” says the Minister of Culture.

Located in
in the Arsenale, Paradise Camp comprises twelve tableau photographs featuring a cast of Sāmoan Fa'afafine (Sāmoa’s third gender’), repurposing and upcycling selected paintings by the late post-impressionist artist Paul Gauguin.

Inspired by the faleaitu (house of spirits) skits performed in Sāmoan culture, Kihara also casts herself as Gauguin in Paul Gauguin with a hat (After Gauguin). In this ingenious role reversal, Kihara is transformed via silicone prosthetics, costume, moustache and wig.
Shot and filmed on location in Upolu Island, Sāmoa, Kihara’s performative photography is presented against a vast wallpaper of a landscape decimated by the 2009 tsunami, and alongside First Impressions: Paul Gauguin - a five-part talk-show series commissioned by Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco and Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, Copenhagen in 2019, where a group of Fa'afafine comment wittily on select Gauguin paintings.
The exhibition features a “Vārchive” – a term coined by Kihara that uses the Sāmoan concept of Vā to describe her relationship with her archive of research.
The artist says, “My Vārchive includes personal research, rare books by 19th century explorers, colonial portraits, pamphlets, news items, a geological sculpture, activist material and visual links between Gauguin and Sāmoa. It provides a backstory or a living story of how Paradise Camp came into being. Through this, the archive doesn’t become storage for dead information but rather a living entity that helps to provide new meaning in the present and what it might mean in the future.”

Getting a wrap on things

A year ago the international residency and exhibition project that I curated, Post-colonialism? was wrapped up. Since then it has been recognised as one of the 10 most significant exhibitions in Israel. It was the product of a dynamic team of women - and 19 talented artists from across the globe. As 2018 commences I reflect back with pride and gratitude for the friendship, trust, and courage of my colleagues, and look forward to exciting new collaborations in the UK, France and elsewhere.
