“This time of year brings me such a strong sense of hopelessness, so I need to do whatever brings the exact opposite of that feeling! For me, it helps to have a project to work on. It doesn’t have to be in anything in particular, it can be a painting or a writing project, anything at all, but something that has its own purpose. It helps because it gives the feeling that things are in motion... For instance, if I’m frustrated with something, I’ll journal about it and transform that feeling into something else.

The other thing I do – if I am feeling super overwhelmed with work and deadlines, which happens a lot! – is plan days where I am allowed to do nothing at all. Knowing that this day is my safe haven makes all the other days better.”

“The main thing that keeps me going through winter is sports! But if you don’t want to go out, my advice is to make social plans with friends. Stay inside, do activities together, anything you like. My preference always is to play board games. My favourite is Cluedo.” ~ Shivanshi (she/her), MSc Civil Engineering.

Lucky for Shivanshi, we've got plenty of events involving board games coming up, with the first taking place on 20 February with . Check out of our full programme online!

🗣️ “My tip is to do it like the animals! By which I mean: In winter, animals eat a lot of food and they go to sleep. We all worry about sleeping and eating too much, but in the winter we should just do it. Your body needs it! You can eat that extra Dominos! I mean this in a more radical way than ~ “take a day for yourself” ~ I mean really put yourself first… It’s a tough one to follow but I am trying to do it. Also, we are all feeling less energetic and less optimistic this time of year. I think we need to talk about that more and joke about it, even.

One other thing I have found helps me is talking with others who are going through a hard time too. Being useful and helping each other out can really help and put things into perspective, even just to forget about your own problems for a little while. Keep your friends close, always!”

Words of wisdom from PhD candidate Claudia Muscari (she/they).

How do you get through the darkest months of the year?

💭 : “Don’t stay in the same place for too long. A change of environment really helps. I notice when I’m studying in my room for too long my mood gets visibly worse. Go to a different room or go outside–even if it’s cold! Also, every week I go to my association , the LGBTQ+ youth association of Delft. Generally, it’s a safe space for q***r people, and I've made a lot of friends there. They have nice activities every week, for instance you can have dinner there on Mondays, and bar nights on Thursdays on Saturdays. I’m really happy I joined."
