Lieve muziekvrienden,
Natuurlijk ben ik overtuigd van de kwaliteit van alle musici en ensembles die tijdens het komende Blaricum Music Festival de r***e zullen passeren maar een van mijn persoonlijke favorieten is het beroemde Quatuor Danel.
Het kwartet bestaat nu 35 jaar en heeft in al die jaren een zeer breed repertoire opgebouwd. Toch blijken ze een lichte voorliefde te hebben voor de muziek van de Russische componist Dmitri Sjostakovitsj en zijn - in Polen geboren maar naar Rusland gevluchte - discipel Mieczysław Weinberg en ik ben dan ook erg blij dat ze in Blaricum Sjostakovitsj´ zeer indringende 8e strijkkwartet zullen spelen. Ze zijn vorige jaar ´Artists in Residence´ geweest van Londen´s fantastische Wigmore Hall, hebben de - redelijk onbekende - strijkkwartetten van Prokofjev opgenomen en speelden verder op zo ongeveer alle continenten en op alle bekende podia. De Nederlandse Strijkkwartet Academie mag zich gelukkig prijzen dat Marc Danel er Artistiek Directeur is. Hij is een aanstekelijk communicatieve en extraverte violist die niet alleen het beste uit zijn kwartetcollega´s weet te halen maar ook uit de jonge musici met die hij bij de NSKA onder zijn hoede heeft genomen. Marc is een échte rasmusicus, een soort waar er maar niet genoeg van kunnen zijn!
Als u door het festivalprogramma heengaat (www.blaricumfestival.com), staat u dan ook even stil bij de interessante lezing die altvioliste/schrijfster Ewa Maria Wagner op 29 juni in de Blaricumse Boekhandel zal geven. Ewa speelt in het Radio Filharmonisch Orkest maar heeft zich de laatste jaren ook tot succesvolle schrijfster van boeken (Het Tristan Akkoord en Hotel Goldberg, Uitgeverij Meulenhoff) en columns voor de NRC ontwikkeld. Ze zal het over deze duo-functie hebben, ze zal - samen met een collega - voor u spelen én na afloop kunt u haar - onder het genot van een lekker drankje - het hemd van het lijf vragen. Er zijn voor deze lezing maar 50 plaatsen beschikbaar en op=op!

Dear Friends,
Naturally, I am convinced of the exceptional quality of all the musicians and ensembles appearing at the upcoming Blaricum Music Festival, but one of my personal favourites is undoubtedly the renowned Quatuor Danel.
Now celebrating its 35th anniversary, the quartet has built up an impressively wide-ranging repertoire over the years. They do, however, seem to have a particular affinity for the music of the Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich and his Polish-born disciple, later exiled to Russia, Mieczysław Weinberg. I am therefore especially delighted that they will perform Shostakovich’s deeply moving String Quartet No. 8 in Blaricum.
Last year, they were Artists in Residence at London’s magnificent Wigmore Hall, they have recorded the relatively little-known string quartets of Sergei Prokofiev, and they have performed on virtually every continent and at many of the world’s leading concert venues. The Dutch String Quartet Academy is fortunate indeed to have Marc Danel as its Artistic Director. He is an infectiously communicative and charismatic violinist who not only brings out the very best in his fellow quartet players, but also in the young musicians he mentors at the academy. Marc is a born musician of the rarest kind — and we can never have enough of those.
As you browse through the festival programme at Blaricum Music Festival, I would also warmly encourage you to take note of the fascinating talk to be given on 29 June at the Blaricumse Boekhandel by violist and author Ewa Maria Wagner. Ewa performs with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, but in recent years she has also established herself as a successful author, with novels including Het Tristan Akkoord and Hotel Goldberg,
both published by Meulenhoff, as well as a columnist for NRC. During the event, she will speak about combining these two careers, perform together with a colleague, and afterwards you will have the opportunity — while enjoying a glass of something pleasant — to ask her all your questions.
