Last week, Klaudija Ylaite and Lily Dollner arrived in Bierum to begin a two-month residency, which will culminate in a duo exhibition at the beginning of November.
Their collaborative project, currently in its research phase, explores recalibrating the senses and a (re)turn to the state of no-mind. They will be accomplishing this by developing their budding home-grown ideology, lovingly nicknamed Lobotomism.
Ylaite and Dollner investigate the medical history of lobotomy and its violence targeting minorities, and look at how lobotomy is applied in popular culture from the Ramones’ “Teenage Lobotomy” to a popular internet meme, “Live, Laugh, Lobotomy.” Can this historical act of medical violence be reinterpreted and reclaimed as a chic post-something ideology?
Having spent an intensive summer clown course at École Philippe Gaulier, the duo will put what they have named their inner idiots to work. The idiocy will help them make something out of the multifaceted history and cultural image of lobotomy.
More information on the process and exhibition comes later.
