The kitchen is closing for a short break. We are incredibly grateful to everyone for coming. We have sold out no less than 5 shows and enjoyed the enthusiasm of the audience every night. We could not have done it without the help of the audience!

We are going to rest and recharge for a while and then set the table again at Oerol. See you there!

Better together 💪🏼

At Lacuna Kitchen we believe in working together. Our team can bring a lot to the table, but collaborations with other partners even more. That is why we have joined forces with FairWork. FairWork fights against, and prevents modern slavery in the Netherlands and stands up for the interests of its victims.

Together with FairWork, we have searched and found kitchen workers for our performance in the Netherlands. In addition, FairWork assists us in advice ánd they will host the audio installation of Lacuna Kitchen with stories of the performers.

We are very happy and grateful for the help and commitment of FairWork. Together for a better future.

Collaboration is at the heart of Lacuna Kitchen.

Lacuna Kitchen addresses urgent societal issues—particularly the ongoing impact of colonialism and migration on our contemporary food culture. Through storytelling, shared meals, and collective reflection, we create space for dialogue, connection, and transformative change.

We are proud to be working alongside a strong network of strategic partners who each bring unique strengths to this long-term project:

🍽 Stadsatelier Arnhem (Municipality of Arnhem) – a hub for social innovation and community-driven initiatives.
👐 FairWork – advocates for fair treatment of (migrant) workers, fighting exploitation and promoting human rights.
🎭 Theater aan de Rijn – a dynamic theatre for emerging makers exploring new forms of storytelling and performance.
🌿 Oerol Festival – one of the Netherlands' most experimental festivals, known for its immersive, location-based art and performance.
🌆 Grand Theatre Groningen – a space for contemporary makers to question and shape the world through artistic exploration.

Together, we are co-creating a platform where food becomes more than sustenance—it becomes a catalyst for dialogue, memory, and connection.

A little insight on our research process.

"Lacuna Kitchen’s trajectory emphasises the importance of the process of gathering; listening to stories, compiling information, and working with non-professional actors. These aspects are as crucial as the final presentations themselves. The process is central not only to the research, but also to actually building community through working with communities. Afra Tafri believes in the healing, connecting power of theatre, when given the time and attention it deserves.

The research is meticulous and sensitive. We recognise the delicate nature of the themes we explore and approach them with respect and integrity. Our goal is not only to inform and educate, but also to create a safe space in which complex conversations can take place—conversations that bring us closer together and contribute to a deeper understanding of our shared humanity.

By connecting the past to the present, and crossing paths between diverse communities, Lacuna Kitchen hopes to shed light on the rich, if painful, mosaic of our shared heritage. It is an invitation to communities that are interested in exploring the deeper layers of our society and our own identity around colonial past and current structures around it. It is an invitation to people to participate in this long-term trajectory of research, discovery and celebration of cultural diversity.

We distinguish research results after a residency, kitchen-telling moments in connection with wishes of the formed community of kitchen workers, audio installation with selected stories of the kitchen workers and the moments of the pop-up restaurant Lacuna Kitchen."

Tickets are now available!

Lacuna Kitchen is not an ordinary show, nor a classic restaurant. It is a sensory experience at the table – a place where stories, labor, identity and food culture come together in smell, taste and encounter. With dishes inspired by real life stories, and conversations that taste like more.

Lacuna Kitchen will premiere in Arnhem on May 23nd!

Behind every meal lies a story. About hands that work, flavors that travel, and histories that are passed on in silence. Lacuna Kitchen is an immersive theater performance about the people behind our food culture – the kitchen workers, the invisible labor, the routes that ingredients and stories take.

This unique performance will premiere in Arnhem in May. Step into a world where smells, sounds and movements come together and experience how food is more than just what is on your plate.

Next week we will release the dates for Arnhem, so stay tuned and make sure you reserve a spot at the table quickly ✨

📍 Location: Oude Kraan 72, Arnhem
🎟 Tickets: Will be available at https://zurl.co/ZHHfS from the 10th of April onwards

This week, sorrel.

"Sorrel is a perennial w**d that is native to Europe and has become widespread throughout North America through the Columbian exchange. In colonial times, Europeans mixed sorrel leaves with vinegar and sugar and ate it as a cold sauce over meat. As a ‘pioneering plant’, it proliferates in disturbed soils and degraded fields."

Can you guess in which part of our menu we will use sorrel?

In the menu of Lacuna Kitchen, we are creating a palate that can't be rooted in a single place. In order to get these ingredients as locally as possible, we visited Voedselbos Elderveld. Marc showed us around and our food ethnographer Anna complemented him and let us taste different things, straight from the ground!

Every week we will highlight an ingredient that we use in our new menu. This week, mustard leaf.

"Mustard was one of the earliest crops to be domesticated and used throughout ancient China, India and Egypt. As one of Europe’s oldest condiments, Spanish colonizers introduced the plant to the Americas in the 18th century. It was planted by missionaries along El Camino Real in California, marking a missionary trail of bright yellow flowers. As a fast-growing and invasive species, it ransacked local ecosystems, collapsing entire chains of native species. While colonizers came in and choked out the indigenous communities, the plants they brought choked out the indigenous plants."

Are you you curious in what way we use it in our menu? Who knows, you might be able to taste it soon! Keep an eye on our socials to see when Lacuna Kitchen will pop up near you.

Big thanks to Marc for showing us around, and of course also to Anna, who provides us with super interesting information about where the ingredients come from, and the best ways to incorporate them into our menu.

Leuk, dat Facebook vraagt "What's on your mind?" als je een bijdrage gaat schrijven. Want ja, what is in our minds?
