Still life has long been a way to explore how light changes the appearance of objects, surfaces and colours.

By carefully observing light and shadow, you can create depth, draw attention to certain details and set the mood of a painting. The use of strong contrasts between light and dark is known as chiaroscuro.

These principles are still used today to experiment with light and shadow and change the way we see and experience a painting. 🎨

Some people think light can be painted on its own, but it’s the shadows that really help us see and understand the light. ☀️

The colour, shape and direction of a shadow all tell us something about the light source and the object casting it. The colour of the shadow is also influenced by the colour of the object, while the shape follows its form.

That’s why paying attention to shadows can make such a difference in your artwork. They give your light more depth and make everything feel more realistic.

In a way, the shadow is what gives us the light. 🎨

Day 6: Texture 🖊️

For this illustration, was inspired by the different textures an artist learns to draw along their creative journey. From stones and leaves to waves, portraits and lace, each new texture is a chance to practise, explore and develop your skills.

For the illustration, Anna used PANTONE markers and Sakura Pigma Micron fineliners.
