Julian Black turns 35: "Reflecting on a Lifelong Passion for DJing"
Today, as I celebrate my 35th birthday, I find myself reflecting on a journey that's spanned over two decades in the DJ world. As the founder of Dutch DJ World, my message today is not just about my journey, but also about the lessons learned and the insights gained.
In recent years, I've observed a diminishing desire in many to chase their dreams of becoming professional DJs. Thereโs a saying that warns, โTurn your hobby into your profession, and you lose a hobby.โ This rings true for many. DJing is more than just hitting play or raising your hands in triumph. Itโs about entrepreneurship, brand management, tech savvy, and so much more. Even icons like David Guetta have noted the shifting landscape, where shows sometimes feel more digital than physical.
So, what's been the secret to my longevity in this dynamic field? When my hobby became my profession, it evolved into something greater - a deep-rooted passion and obsession, reminiscent of the thrill I felt when I first bought my turntables as a kid.
The most rewarding aspect? Being rebooked because your performance resonated with the audience. Itโs a testament to the connection and experience you create.
My advice to aspiring DJs is this: Build your brand, be an enterprising force, embrace social media. But if you want to truly endure in this industry, anchor your journey in a love for music. Let your passion be the fuel that drives you. When you do what you love, it never feels like work. Every gig, every set, every moment โ it's all about embracing and sharing what you love most.
As I step into another year, I'm grateful for every moment that has defined this incredible journey. Here's to the passion that keeps us all spinning!
