Excellent visit to see Alitex Glasshouses greenhouse’s and immaculate factory yesterday. Thank you so much for a great day and for such a delicious lunch by Julius Roberts after a fantastic talk with M A R K D I A C O N O. Great to chat to some wonderful friends and colleagues Francesca Perry Alison Davidson Zoe Levey Jessica Doyle Penny Sainsbury Jonathan Rhys Abbott to name just a few. Can’t wait to put another of their greenhouses in a clients garden soon! They really are beautiful, sustainable and will out last all of us!

A recent visit to the nursery to choose plants for a planting plan for a garden design project in Hampstead. I always enjoy seeing the plants together rather than simply choosing from a list. You can start to see which colours, textures and forms work beautifully alongside one another and often discover combinations and, in this case, colours you hadn’t imagined in the studio.

A few different rosemarys caught my eye on a recent nursery visit, but ‘Roman Beauty’ was the one I kept coming back to. So healthy and beautifully grown, with a lovely soft habit and it was looking particularly happy and healthy. It’s these little nursery discoveries that can make a planting plan come to life.

I’ve always loved Verbena bonariensis, but perhaps even more so for what it brings into a garden.

It’s a wonderful plant for pollinators. Bees and butterflies seem to be constantly visiting its clusters of purple flowers, and because it flowers for such a long period, it provides a valuable source of nectar through the summer and into autumn. I also love the way it grows too tall and airy, weaving through other planting rather than sitting heavily in a border.

I always love a visit to a Nursery, especially when you are working on a planting plan. There’s nothing like seeing plants up close, playing with colour, texture and form, and finding by these combinations that might just work beautifully together.

I think lavender is one of those plants that almost everyone has a connection with. Whether it’s a lavender bag in a drawer, the scent of a favourite soap, or brushing past it on a summer walk, it has a wonderful way of bringing back memories. That’s exactly why I wanted it to frame this path.
As you walk towards the sculpture the scent follows you, the lavender softens the edges of the stone, and, almost without realising it, you slow down.

One of the joys of gardening today is how easily ideas are shared. A single gardening job can suddenly capture everyone’s attention, and with 8/8 approaching there are plenty of reminders that it’s time to cut back lavender.

They’re a helpful prompt, but a walk through Fulham Palace Gardens the other day reminded me that the plants usually know best. If the flowers are fading and looking tired then the time is right to cut them back.

Every garden has its own rhythm. The more we observe it, the more confident we become in following its lead rather than the date.

One of the finest wisterias in London, growing in the beautiful walled garden at Fulham Palace, is putting on a remarkable second performance this summer. While a few flowers after the main display aren’t unusual, a flush like this is something rather special and, I suspect, a response to this year’s prolonged heat and sunshine.

It’s impossible not to admire the spectacle, but it’s also a reminder that our gardens are responding to a changing climate in ways we’re only just beginning to understand.

One of the things I love most about this garden is the feeling of space. From the moment you arrive, the front and back gardens are designed to frame the house while sitting naturally within the surrounding landscape.

Sweeping lawns, thoughtful structure, and carefully chosen planting all work together to soften the architecture and create a sense of calm. One thing I've come to appreciate is that a garden doesn't have to be full to feel complete. Sometimes it's the open spaces that make everything else shine.
