If your game never gets harder, it’s boring. If it gets too hard too fast, it’s frustrating.

So big brains of gamedev came up with three core types of difficult curve:

📈 The linear curve. Best for games where the goal is consistent pressure. Challenge increases gradually as the player gets deeper into the game session. The grind never stops.

🪜 The staircase. The industry standard for pacing. Introduce a mechanic (the spike), give the player time to get good at it (the plateau), test them with a boss, and then repeat the loop.

👑 The power fantasy. The curve actually goes down. As the player unlocks better gear and skills, they eventually outpace the enemies. Totally unstoppable and loving it.

Color coding is a part of in-game UX design. It’s universal guardrails to help your players quite literally read the room. Sometimes, games also use colors to bamboozle players into walking into the trap.
