Het mini filmfestival van Het Puntje en Movies that Matter is terug! 🎬🐚

Van 21 t/m 23 augustus ben je welkom in De Komma, het sfeervolle bijgebouw van Het Puntje op het uiterste puntje van Scheveningen.

Samen met amalnacollective zijn drie bijzondere programma’s samengesteld die uitnodigen tot reflectie, gesprek en verbinding.

De filmselectie van dit jaar focust zich op de thema’s hoop, migratie en veerkracht - de thema’s van de ‘Portaits of Hope’ tentoonstelling die de hele maand augustus in De Komma te bekijken is.

🦊 vrijdag 21 augustus: A Fox Under a Pink Moon

Zestien jaar is Soraya nog maar, en ze maakt al de meest fantastische tekeningen en sculpturen, even prachtig als duister. Soraya is een eigenzinnige Afghaanse beeldhouwer en tekenaar die al vijf jaar lang probeert Iran te ontvluchten om bij haar moeder in Oostenrijk te kunnen zijn.

Bij de filmvertoning verzorgt Ilyas Nadjafi een bijzondere performance, waarin hij Perzische zang combineert met het bespelen van de tanpura.

Na afloop van de film vindt een nagesprek met het publiek plaats, onder leiding van moderator Sam.

☀️ zaterdag 22 augustus: Daughters of the Sun

In deze documentaire volgt de Koerdisch-Nederlandse filmmaker Reber Dosky negen Yezidi-vrouwen bij de terugkeer naar hun gemeenschap. Ze werden uit de handen van IS-strijders bevrijd nadat ze jarenlang als (seks)slaven werden misbruikt. Met elkaars liefde en steun, en geïnspireerd door de wijze theatermaker Hussein, vinden ze de kracht om vooruit te kijken.

Na de filmvertoning is er een gesprek met regisseur Reber Dosky, onder leiding van moderator Sam.

🚢 zondag 23 augustus: Helden van de Galaxy

Hoe is het om op te groeien in een asielzoekerscentrum? Helden van de Galaxyvolgt het leven van Nour (11), Abdulatif (12), Laila (10) en de broers Basel (10) en Mohammad (14) die tijdelijk op een schip wonen dat dienst doet als azc, in de haven van Amsterdam.

Terwijl zij noodgedwongen, in de surrealistische omgeving van een voormalig cruiseschip, moeten dealen met een onzekere toekomst en de uitdagingen van integratie in een nieuw land, bieden vriendschap en verbeelding hen kracht en hou

Door het hele schooljaar organiseren we filmvertoningen voor het voortgezet onderwijs, internationale schakelklassen en het mbo op bioscooplocaties door heel Nederland. Leerlingen kijken samen een inspirerende film én gaan daarna onder begeleiding van een moderator en gastspreker in gesprek over actuele maatschappelijke thema’s.⁠

Op donderdag 25 juni organiseren zowel als , samen met Movies that Matter, in aanloop naar Keti Koti een bijzonder programma waarin film en ontmoeting centraal staan.⁠

📍 Theater Dakota⁠
Bekijk de documentaire Bagasi – Wat we meedragen, waarin regisseur Emma Lesuis een persoonlijke zoektocht aangaat naar de geschiedenis van haar (schoon)familie en het koloniale verleden van Suriname. Vooraf spelen Rory Ronde en Damani Leidsman live muziek die speciaal voor de film is gecomponeerd. Na afloop volgt een nagesprek met Emma, psychotherapeut Omar van Ommeren, Astrid Feiter (Haags Verhaal) en het publiek over de erfenis van het verleden en wat we doorgeven aan volgende generaties.⁠

📍 De Regentes⁠
De Regentes presenteert een avond met de recente films (Inheemse Surinamers in Rotterdam en Monikondee), gecombineerd met het boek Het vervlechten van hoop, vol verhalen van en over inheemse Surinamers. Een inspirerende avond voor iedereen die meer wil leren over de geschiedenis, trots en dilemma’s van inheemse Surinamers door de jaren heen. Aan de hand van de verhalen gaan we onder leiding van Ferdy Karto met elkaar in gesprek.⁠

🧳 Aanstaande donderdag 11 juni vertonen we samen met de docu Bagasi - wat we meedragen tijdens de Pakhuis Kino avond.

In deze documentaire komt regisseur Emma Lesuis oog in oog met het koloniale verleden, wanneer ze een koffer van haar schoonvader ontvangt. Daarin zit het fotoarchief van zijn opa, die als koloniaal bestuurder in Suriname heerste over Emma’s eigen grootouders. In Bagasi onderzoekt ze deze gedeelde geschiedenis en de sporen die de gescheiden werelden van hun voorouders hebben nagelaten.

Na de filmvertoning gaat moderator in gesprek met en het publiek. Zanger en gitarist verzorgen een sfeervol liveoptreden dat de avond muzikaal omlijst.

🎬 Submissions for the Movies that Matter Festival 2027 are now open!⁠

Do you have a compelling short or feature-length documentary or fiction film, completed in 2026 or 2027, that addresses human rights issues? We warmly invite you to submit your work for the 2027 edition of the Movies that Matter Festival!

The festival will take place from 19 to 27 March 2027 in The Hague. The submission deadline is 1 November 2026. The final programme will be announced at the end of February 2027.

On Tour in April: Derek vs Derek 👨🏻‍🌾

In the idyllic English countryside lives an intensive dairy farmer called Derek. One day his neighbour, also called Derek, forsakes farming tradition and starts turning his land over to wild nature. How does the community react when one of its own turns his back on their way of life?

Renouncing the damage conventional farming is doing, Derek Gow unleashes a whirlwind of change: wild boar turf-up fields and over a hundred ponds are being dug up.
His neighbour Derek Banbury peers over his hedge in disbelief. ‘I don’t know what he’s doing. It’s not farming, it’s just a bloody mess!’

Derek vs Derek is a funny story about a serious subject. Set against the backdrop of the growing crisis of biodiversity loss and climate change, this observational film, shot over three years, charts the relationship of the two Dereks, and the impact this momentous decision has on the local community.

🏆 Cutting Through Rocks has been voted the winner of the Movies that Matter Audience Award 2026 by the festival audience. The award was presented on the closing night of the festival, 28 March 2026, by NPO, the Dutch national broadcaster, this year for the first time as official award partner.

The film by Sara Khaki and Mohammadreza Eyni tells the story of Sara Shahverdi. As the first female council member of her small Iranian village, Sara is determined to break deep-rooted patriarchal traditions. She teaches teenage girls to ride motorbikes, encourages them to continue their education and works to prevent child marriages. But Sara’s fearless and combative approach earns her many enemies – particularly among men. This past Wednesday, the filmmakers also received the Activist Lens Award for the film at Movies that Matter Festival.

Charelle Akihary, Director of Audiences and Marketing at NPO: “The Movies that Matter Festival moves me every year. The films open our eyes, invite us to see the world from different perspectives and spark conversations the moment the credits roll; conversations that extend far beyond the cinema and help us make sense of the world. The Audience Award is a remarkable prize: it is the audience itself that tells us which film has touched them most deeply. I want to express my admiration for all the filmmakers telling stories that matter, and in particular I would like to congratulate Mohammadreza Eyni and Sara Khaki of Cutting Through Rocks, the filmmakers receiving this year’s Audience Award.”

Cutting Through Rocks will be broadcast later this year by HUMAN on NPO 2 and will also be available to stream on NPO Start in The Netherlands.
