Last Saturday I was invited to be apart of something quite special.
The liveness, the shared space the is necessary for theater & performance is what brought me into art in the first place. I am endlessly fascinated by what can happen when people gather together. Of course at this moment it seemingly impossible to do so, yet ways are found that are inspiring and beautiful. Saturday evening looking up and around at all neighbors gathered to see something live reassured me and gave me comfort.

It was a joy for me to tell a story and watch Maria Magdalena Kozlowska, Sarah Naqvi, & Irene Sorozabal Moreno perform for the neighborhood. Thanks so much to Current: a space, Pankaj Tiwari, Juan Miranda (also assisting with my prop), Abhishek Thapar, DAS Theatre for organizing. And to all the neighbors who came to share the space with us (at a distance).

Noah Voelker (1990), is a Texas born, Netherlands based theatre maker. He has worked in the areas of theatre scholarship, storytelling, directing, writing, acting, devised performance, production management, and dramaturgy. Before moving to Amsterdam, he was an Executive Director of the Aesthetic of Waste Collective which operated in San Antonio, Texas. His performance and theoretical research is concentrated in authenticity in performance, dialog practices, storytelling, power dynamics in performance, as well as extensive research and practice on audience participation/collaboration. He regularly collaborated with Ogutu Muraya (KE), Pony Camp Kollective (NL), Shift Happens (NL), & TGSpace (NL). He received his B.A. in Theatre as well as Economics from Trinity University (San Antonio, TX) and his M.A. in Theatre from DASTheatre (Amsterdam, NL) . He is working on a forthcoming work about East Germany in the 1990s - How to Make Good Art for East Germans? which will premiere in late 2020.

One month ago, myself, Burkhard Körner, and Rika Weniger did our first public sharing of materials from our ongoing East Germany project. It had been over a year since we began to have long distance discussion about the current situation in the East, family histories, the legacy of the Wende, and the unheard stories around it all. What was remarkable me about this first sharing was how after our 45 min performance and 30 min after talk a good number of people stuck around to talk. Not just with us, but with each other about their own experiences and perspective surrounding this topic. I am looking forward to where this work will take us. Not just artistically speaking, but also towards what encounters we will have through this piece.
