Seeing “is inherently a very creative act, and you’re constantly revising what you think you see… Less than 20 percent of what we see actually comes from the eye,” said Mr. Fineberg in the interview. “Most of it comes from processing in the brain and the visual cortex and that comes from memories, reason, emotion and all kinds of other things.” So, he concludes “if you don’t have that creative capacity or develop that capacity to be agile, you’re at survival risk.”

Everything must go is made for art manifestation Call of the Mall in Hoog Catharijne and Utrecht Central Station.

The work takes ‘shopjacket' as a starting point.
Shopjacket is a recent phenomena; a solution to desolate shop windows caused by economic crises and increased Internet shopping: by means of prints pasted behind the empty store windows, shopjackets create the illusion that the building is still in use.

Mural depicts a moment placed somewhere in a fictional future in which the shopping mall has become gradually overgrown by nature.

The work is inspired by Life after people (2009-2010), a documentary that speculates on what would happen to all that’s been built if humanity disappeared from the earth.

VAN EYCK’S MIRROR, foyer of The Jan van Eyck Academie, Academieplein 1, Maastricht


The work brings up the playful dimension of this particular space.

The architecture of the newly renovated foyer is used as a ‘model’ for making the design:
the space of the foyer of the Jan van Eyck Akademie is scaled down to a foamboard maquette; the maquette is photographed from both the front and the back; subsequently these 2 opposite views are merged into one layer. The resulting image is blown up into a photo so as to fully cover the three walls in the foyer.

The work is inspired by Foucault’s interpretation of Jan van Eyck’s painting “Arnolfini’s Wedding”, where the mirror-image is trying to escape out of the canvas.
