A TRUE RECOMMENDATION: THE NORTHERN LIGHTS
A VERY VISUAL RADIO SHOW BY GEORGE ISHERWOOD AND GREG LAWSON
Come and see the Northern Lights by Radio Horror Theatre, a chilling theatre comedy ... on the 8th and 9th of may in Theatro Munganga.
The cold war was a period of great political tension, ideological paranoia and,,, thrilling radio plays. In the US people tuned in to hear some scary stories that not also were kind of scary, but also reflected the feel of the era. The tension and paranoia found it's way into pulpy fantasy. Theatre director George Isherwood (a.o. the legendary 'Picnic' by Vis a Vis) and animation director Greg Lawson (a.o. those funny bumpers for BNN and lot's more) share a love for the horror stories from this period. They started to perform those radio plays live, using the the most effective tool a storyteller can use: suggestion. Although there are some funny visual elements in it, the story is told mostly with seemingly simple light effects, suggestive sounds and the human voice. It's like a campfire told to you by someone who knows when to lower the voice...
George and Greg not only did a clever (and very visual) adaptation of a real horror story (The Northern Lights) but also play the leads as a news anchor and a weatherman who introduce the story and later transform into the leading characters of the play.
The story is about scientists in the snowy north..I don't want to summarize the plot here. Not only because is full of twist and turns and it's all too easy to spoil it al, but also because the story is too nonsensical. By the way, in this case that's not such a problem: it's all part of the fun.
Come and see it, this friday or saturday at 20.30 (the venue opens at 20.00) at Theatro Munganga (near the Vondelpark)

Our first review, just in!!

Northern Lights…

A strange, surreal, somehow disturbing, yet superb show. It transports its audience, not only with delight, from the ridiculous to the sublime, but also to somewhere very much ‘else’ or ‘other’; somewhere anything can, and frequently does happen. Here sounds are indeed ‘effects’, as they are stretched, teased out and taken from the beautiful to the terrible by a deadpan duo; females as deadly as the males who complete a cast who add up to and make an infinite more not only of their four, but also of a play that was originally of words, but is now a vision too, a glimpse of another world in which comedy is not just juxtaposed with, but is revealed as horror.

Radio Horror Theatre has specialized in radio horror over the years. With a special mix of black comedy and wry visual effects the audience is laughing one minute and shuddering the next. In their acclaimed version of Donovan’s Brain, a malevolent cauliflower submerged in an aquarium connected to a bicycle pump made sinister bubbles as it sent out mind controlling vibrations. In The Thing on the Forble Board a hideous spider woman entered the set to devour the listening guest. In The Knife Thrower a circus performer on purpose made increasingly deadly mistakes to the applause of the audience. In The Cabinet of Dr Wagenheim a horror film maker in search of screams learned a terrible secret behind a hidden horror sound archive.
