DAS Choreography

DAS Choreography DAS Choreography is a two-year low-residential master programme of DAS Graduate School at the Amster Often resonating long after the two weeks are over.

Dance artists who have established a professional practice and seek possibilities for further reflection and development, can increase their research skills at DAS Choreography (previous: the Amsterdam Master of Choreography - AMCh). This two-year non-residential programme of Higher Professional Education of the Amsterdam University of the Arts aims to contribute to the field of critical and conte

mporary dance research and creation in the Netherlands and abroad. The course provides the support structure and organization to facilitate choreographic and interdisciplinary practice-led research, with an emphasis on the processes of praxis, or metapractice. The individual artistic practice is the point of departure of the programme and will be the guiding thread of the course design. The programme will allow to develop an intensive and sustained dialogue and to work in and off a continuing artistic practice. It offers a place in the words of graduates: “to slow down the chaos”,” to allow for being overwhelmed and not know”, “to allow time for insisting on one thing”. A place to create conditions for generating artistic practices. This is realised through a commitment to a sustained dialogue for a period of two years, actually 2.5, right from the selection interviews. From the very beginning each participant is asked to actively take the lead in designing ways to present the research projects and questions to colleagues. The programme invests in maintaining a high quality exchange of questioning artistic practice and research, made possible through the small size, concentrated and intense quality of exchange. A seminar works as a ‘pressure cooker’, by creating shared mind in the room in which understandings about artistic processes can be brought to another level. This resonance will most often come to expression in the written reports and essays that are produced every semester. Through shared reading sessions a high level of critical analysis and broadening of frames of reference is stimulated. This is done both in the seminars as in monthly Skype conference calls. The programme can rely on a high level of entrance of choreographers who have already developed specific views on art and dance, and consequently on strong collegial exchange.

Master Presentations 2026 – 'tongue bitten | tongue bite | bitten tongue'
On 19, 20 and 21 April our second year students Fernanda Libman, Julek Kreutzer, nisha ha and tis aly will share their work.

The title, proposed by the four artists, activates movement, imagery, flesh and sensation. Tongues bitten to hide emotion, tongue-biting as something sensual or erotic, a bitten tongue that causes pain.

More than anything, the title points to the fragility of staying in resonance with one another when violence, exhaustion and overwhelm shape the conditions under which we gather, move and feel.

We look forward to sharing the frequencies of these works which cannot be contained within the days of the presentations alone, but have unfolded across the two years that the artists’ studies together have encompassed.

Program note: The April 20th presentation of nisha ha will be a covid-safe showing. Please self-test before arriving to DAS. Tests and masks will be available on site as well.

Tatenda Chabarwa is a Zimbabwean-born performing artist whose work as a dancer, choreographer, and musician transcends geographical boundaries. Rooted in the rich artistic traditions of his homeland, Tatenda has cultivated a dynamic career, collaborating with leading international companies while simultaneously nurturing his own unique artistic vision.

Tatenda Chabarwa explores new choreography based on Zimbabwean traditional rhythms, chants, and melodies. He is driven by a fascination with the power of frequency on the body, nature, and all living beings. The practice explores African identity, culture and spirituality through the lens of dance and live music. Tatenda’s artistic practice delves into the origins and foundations of human behaviour within and beyond performance spaces. He utilises the sonic realm – Zimbabwean traditional rhythms, chants, melodies, and ancient instruments – as a core element, developing gestural languages that emerge from this sonic foundation.

Tatenda: I am writing to express my sincere gratitude for considering my request for financial support. I have been accepted into the master’s programme at the Amsterdam University of Arts [DAS Choreography]. However, I am facing financial constraints that are hindering my ability to pursue this opportunity. I am reaching out to request financial assistance to cover my tuition, which amounts to 7,375 euros, and my living costs, which amount to 12,625 euros.

NOISE
By

Noise is a solo with guests choreographed and performed by Julek Kreutzer, together with Lina Gómez, Laura Ramírez Ashbaugh, Fred Raposo and Jakob Bogatzki. With Noise, the choreographer negotiates the sensations and remnants of disorientation and rage in the body through the body.
Noise is a set-up for working through interruptedness, volume, time and speed. Noise is a situation in which the dancing body attempts to process and slide through all information simultaneously.
With Noise, we look for presence.

choreographed & performed by Julek Kreutzer

CONSONANTS
By

The project Consonants is a choreographic exploration inspired by the hypnagogic state, a perceptual phenomenon that occurs in the transitional phase between wakefulness and sleep, when the frequencies of our brain shift from beta (12.5–30 Hz) to alpha (8–12 Hz). While thoughts transition from the objective into the subjective rhythm of the mind, our sensorial body can at times translate this shift in neurological activity into hallucinatory images, sounds, or bodily sensations. Unlike dreams, in which the subject is fully immersed, hypnagogic visions appear as if observed from a distance, positioning the individual as a spectator of their own perception.

Rather than approaching hypnagogia as a theme, the project seeks to reflect its perceptual qualities in the performative space, crafting a dynamic interplay between sonic, aesthetic, and choreographic elements designed to destabilize and interfere with the spectator’s interpretation. By echoing the ever-changing quality of hypnagogia, the research aims to expand on the complexity of the relational space between two people, piercing through the rigidity of binary interpretations of the world proposed by dominant narratives.

A SICK WOMAN PRESENTATION
By .needs.a.break

The title of this presentation “sick woman” is a direct reference to Johanna Hedva’s Sick Woman Theory. At the beginning of her article, she challenges the classic, liberal way of doing politics, which is, getting your body into the street and protesting. Hedva asks, How about those people who want to but cannot get out on the street? For example, how about people who are imprisoned by a job, or by the threat of losing it if they go out? how about people who are threatened by political and other sorts of violence? how about people who have disability and illness therefore physically cannot get out? How about people who are occupied by their responsibilities of taking care of someone with disability or illness?
Just like Hedva’s article, this research project also seeks a different way of doing politics, of protesting against capitalism and its exploitation of each body and each living reality. The most anti-capitalist protest, in Hedva’s words, is to care.

On 17 September, 19:00 we welcome Dani d’Emilia (they/them) for a guest lecture on “Co-sensing with Radical Tenderness: Towards Undoing the Spell of Separability”.

Dani d’Emilia is an artist and educator working at the intersections of performance, radical pedagogy, social justice, and eco-relational care. Since 2014, they have developed a substantial body of work around Radical Tenderness, exploring its potential to reconfigure connections between reason, affect, and relationality through political practices of healing that foster metabolic intimacy and visceral response_ability. A member of Gesturing Towards Decolonial Futures (CA/BR) since 2017 and formerly of La Pocha Nostra (US/MX, 2011–16), Dani teaches and works on various projects internationally, exploring how the arts can nourish cognitive, affective, and relational vitality amid deepening social and ecological crises.
