Lidiya Blinova (1948 – 1996) and her husband Rustam Khalfin (1949 – 2008) brought performance and installation art to Central Asia, organizing experimental art shows in their apartment in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Artists Saule and Suinbike Suleimenova shot a short documentary about the life and work of Blinova and her husband. Yerbossyn Meldibekov (1964) explores the construction of national identity in post-communist Central Asia. Using absurd humor, he responds in a critical manner to both Western and Russian coloniality. During Full Moon #8 we will screen two of Meldibekov’s works: ‘The Birth of the Saddle (in memory of Rustam Khalfin)’ and ‘Shu-Chu’. Meldibekov employs the caricature of the Central Asian ‘simpleton’ with its fundamental emotions as a decolonial tool mirroring a colonial perspective, yet simultaneously restoring his own human dignity. During FULL MOON: NORTHERN BARBARIANS we will screen 'Eternal Bride', in which artist Almagul Menlibayeva (1969) goes to town wearing a bridal gown. How do the people on Almaty’s streets react to this?

Menlibayeva critically addresses social, economic, political and ecological transformations in post-Soviet Central Asia. “My educational background is in the Soviet Russian, avant-garde school of Futurism, which I combine with the nomadic aesthetic of post-Soviet, contemporary Kazakhstan. I explore the nature of a shared cultural experience, which manifests itself as a form of thought among the peoples of the ancient, arid and dusty Steppes between the Caspian Sea, Baikonur and Altai in today’s Kazakhstan.”
