When I told Archie about the name of my (former) ship, when he came along to have his saxophone checked, he reacted surprised: ‘My name’, he said, ‘is Ship, but I have changed it into Shepp, because it has a more commercial touch to it.’
Every 2nd and 4th wednesday every month (except december 4th and 18th, 2019 which are 1st and 3rd wednesdays) we treat our audience with a new repertoire played by 2 special guests, a bassplayer and a pianist, along with the host of the evening, saxophonist Arthur Heuwekemeijer. Since a yogaclass takes place earlier in the evening, guests may walk in from 21.21h. Soon afterwards the band starts a first set with wellknown as well as newly arranged or composed melodies. Musicians are invited to play on the jamsession. (They, of course, need to be well prepared. Know your key, your lyrics and be ready to count in your tune(s). Play-along is something you do at home with your computer, to practise, not with a band).
Saxophone and clarinetlessons show that Arthur is also capable of convincingly explaining the music he plays to beginners as well as advanced players. Also theoryclasses at the piano are among the lessons he teaches. You can rent a saxophone or clarinet (pay to own) and bring in your instrument for repair or complete overhaul. Saxophones and clarinets (new and used with a 3 year garantee) are for sale in his workshop. Arthur has also designed a new keywork for saxophone and a new type of neck which fits all saxophones, which are currently under construction.
