We open our doors again this spring for our annual Open Studios.

This year the event will take place over two long weekends in May. Studios, project rooms, the garden, and all conceivable spaces in between, will be transformed into viewing and meeting places where 46 artists in residence will share their artistic practices and present what has emerged from a period of experimenting, researching and producing new work.⁣

Hend Samir: Hide and Seek

Today, #Rijksakademie resident Hend Samir's solo exhibition ‘Hide and Seek’ opens at Harkawik gallery in New York, alongside the acquisition of a major new mural by the Rubell Museum. In her first solo show in New York, Samir will exhibit a selection of paintings in a new mid-size format opposite two monumental canvases.

Here she pushes further into territory defined over her exhibitions of the past 3 years: the transgression of boundaries cultural, normative, geopolitical and painterly; the implication of the viewer as an at-scale participant in a series of interconnected vignettes; the fearless exploration of contradictions, ambiguities and paradoxes evident in the vicissitudes of human affairs. ‘Hide and Seek’ is on view until 12 May. Samir will complete a residency at the Rubell Museum this Summer.

From Saturday 8 April onwards, Groninger Museum is presenting #rijksakademie alum Marit Westerhuis' solo exhibition MEGALITH, in which she interrogates the relationship between human beings, myth and nature. A vast postapocalyptic landscape will dominate the museum, a world in which people return to centuries-old rituals and seek comfort in mythological tales, trying to find meaning in the world when they are threatened with extinction.

AC/KADEMIE 6: FROM THE GLOBAL SOUTH WITH LOVE by Tropical Tap Water⁣

For the sixth iteration of Ac/kademie, the band Tropical Tap Water, consisting of Daniel Aguilar Ruvalcaba, Diana Cantarey, Julian Abraham “Togar” and Simnikiwe Buhlungu, will present their work and discuss the process behind their collaboration. They will share songs and texts written in relation to their role as harvester during the Majelis Akbar #2 (mega assembly) for the Lumbung network of documenta fifteen, and share their views and thoughts on communal resources of tangible and intangible assets, which they call Baskom/Waskom. Baskom is a way to embrace and practice the sharing of resources. ⁣

In between their talks, presentations and conversations, Tropical Tap Water will have live jamming sessions and show related videos, images and other documentations.⁣

#rijksakademie alumni Jude Crilly and Floris Schönfeld invited 12 artists - among others alumni G, Artor Jesus Inkerö, Gabriel Lester, Laura O'Neill, Ian Page and Mette Sterre, and advisor Monster Chetwynd - to join them for the first in a series of sound events at W139, Amsterdam.

Wednesday 30 March 2022, 16:00–17:30.

W139 becomes an immersive sound programme where deep
listening is possible, with works played through a quadraphonic
sound system.

Currently on view in St. Catherine’s Cathedral (Utrecht): #rijksakademie resident Vibeke Mascini’s installation Ray.

The work is part of the artist's ongoing research on energy transference and investigations into how the vitality of matter in decay, remission, or after death can be turned into a power source. Her previous works Salvage (2019) and Instar (2021) reflect on the incineration of subjects such as a whale’s body and a batch of police-confiscated items. Ray proposes ways to experience the heat produced by the process of cremation consciously, to acknowledge the non-linearity of bereavement and loss, and to offer alternate means by which to grieve and remember.

The work is commissioned by BAK, basis voor actuele kunst, Utrecht, as part of the project No Linear F**king Time (3 December 2021 – 22 May 2022) and is realised in collaboration with Museum Catharijneconvent, Utrecht. No Linear F**king Time is convened by BAK’s curator of public practice Rachael Rakes with artist-interlocutors Jumana Manna, Amelia Groom and Rijksakademie alumni Femke Herregraven and Claudia Martínez Garay.

Starting tomorrow, Lafayette Anticipations presents 'Seen through others', #rijksakademie alum Xinyi Cheng's first institutional exhibition in France. The show includes over thirty works produced between 2016 and 2021. Spread over the three floors of the Fondation, the enigmatic universe of the artist alternates scenes of intimate life inspired by her encounters, portraits of her friends and pets, all captured in an atmosphere of dreams and solitude. Through a singular use of light and colour, she expresses, beyond a false softness, the intensity of feelings, reveries and impulses that reside within our everyday experiences of being in the world.

An artist-to-artist aid for the Kyiv Biennial

In 2018, Ukrainian curator Vasyl Cherepanyn (director of the Visual Culture Research Center in Kyiv) organised The European International, a 2018 exhibition for the Forum on European Culture that asked: can international solidarity be created through art?

In response to this call, artists, graphic designers, and art professionals who participated in The European International, together with the #Rijksakademie and De Balie, have come together to answer this question in the form of an artist-to-artist aid package on behalf of Vasyl and his colleagues at the Kyiv Biennial's Emergency Support Initiative.

Lumen Travo Gallery presents #rijksakadamie Thierry Oussou solo show 'Equilibrium Wind', a new body of work developed by the artist in his home country Benin. 'Equilibrium Wind' addresses the cotton plantations located in the district of Panouignan and the significant impact they have on the country's economic growth.
