FLAM Amsterdam

FLAM Amsterdam FLAM (Live Art Amsterdam) is an annual exhibition of live art, intent on creating room for the wide spectrum of performance art practices of today.

FLAM, Live Art Amsterdam, is a festival for performance art in Amsterdam. FLAM operates like a group exhibition of artworks from different disciplines that have in common the urge to be presented live. This leads to a diverse program of both conceptual and more physical performances. FLAM also operates as a forum for debate and a platform to stimulate Dutch and international performance art and th

e exchange between both. The first pilot edition took place in April 2010, leading in the subsequent years to new artistic ventures and contacts for those who took part in the festival. FLAM provides a podium for artists to experiment and present their work to a professional audience from both the visual arts and the theatre world. FLAM has made connections with other festivals and platforms such as MPA Berlin; Venice International Performance Art Week; PAE Performance Art Event; PAS, Performance Art Studies and particularly the performance platform Verbo at Galeria Vermelho in São Paulo, Brazil. Almost each year artists who participate at FLAM get the opportunity to present their work at Verbo and in 2016 also at MIP, Manifestação Internacional de Performance in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. FLAM is based in Arti et Amicitiae and collaborates with other venues in Amsterdam, like Dancemakers (2016) and Frascati Theater (2017).

Forceful Catering is a choreographic and musical performance rooted in the East and Southeast Asian tradition of preparing sticky rice cakes (mochi). The utensils used for rice pounding are transformed into experimental percussion instruments, producing bass rhythms that merge with electronic music.

Drawing inspiration from traditional Chinese folklore and rice-pounding work songs, this project reimagines these ancestral rhythms through contemporary narratives that confront present urgencies. Can a woman’s body become—not merely a vessel—but a source of force and pe*******on? What if acts of intensity and impact could lead not to violence, but to nourishment and care? How might the transformation of rice embody cycles of birth and death, fertility and decay?

The performance unfolds as both a club experience and a catering ritual, feeding those who crave rhythm, touch, and intimacy.

In Portuguese, vira-lata means “street dog”, the mixed-breed survivors who roam freely through cities, full of spirit and resilience.
Vira-latas carry the beauty of mixture, strength, and adaptability, a celebration of what’s wild, diverse, and uncontained.

After the Social Sculpture Trilogy THE CAVE, THE FOUNTAIN, and THE MARKET, the wild and esteemed Brazilian q***r choreographer based in Amsterdam, Fernando Belfiore, returns with a new sensuous mess.

Humorous and provocative, Belfiore starts from the notion of performance as an unfolding of our understanding of the material world and the social relations shaped by class struggle. Offering a visceral critique of consumerism and spectacle, the work alchemically stirs imagination and hope, regurgitating the concept of capitalism as religion.
The Vira-Lata Complex
The piece takes as its points of departure the Vira-Lata Complex, a term first coined by writer Nelson Rodrigues and later expanded by philosopher Marcia Tiburi to describe the inferiority complex of the colonized, their submission in the face of injustice and inequality — and the participatory practices of visual artist Lygia Clark, a seminal figure of the Tropicália movement.

The performance probes questions of obedience, fetishism, and trained domestication, while also devouring revolt itself. Our guts, nine meters of nerves and memory, become a stage where matter, emotion, and wildness break through.

Join us for this visceral experience, a sensuous, critical, and unruly new work by Fernando Belfiore.

thanks to for trusting in art 🙏🏽
