Veem House for Performance

Veem House for Performance Veem House for Performance is an internationally oriented theatre and production house rooted in Amsterdam West. We welcome you to explore!

We are a home for performance, mime, dance and disciplines yet to be named, where artists are given space to experiment, develop and present. Our focus is on movement, whether it be physical or social – from startling performances by upcoming artists to discursive evenings and vibrant Veem House dinners. By working collaboratively with partners and co-curators, we aim to nurture and amplify multip

le voices in the artistic field. We use our resources to give artists the time, space and attention they need to develop a practice that eventually moves beyond our studios and far beyond Dutch borders.

A week ago we came together one last time in the theater of Veem. Cradled between its arches we mourned and celebrated the place where so many of us shared their first performances, fell in love with theater, made lifelong friends and found comfort.

Through a variety of set-ups, talented artists shared their creative interpretations of grief and the bittersweet celebration of endings. Their performances took us on an emotional journey: moments of sadness were followed by bursts of laughter. At one point, we screamed at the top of our lungs; the next, we listened with rapt attention. We danced together, shared hugs, and reconnected with those we hadn’t seen in a while. We could not have hoped for a more meaningful farewell.

So, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the three incredible curators who brought this evening to life with their creativity and hard work: Alice Pons, Olivia Reschofsky and Vincent Riebeek. You made this farewell a moment we will always treasure. We would also like to thank all the artists who shared their energy, passion, and creativity with us:

Mavi Veloso, Aryelle Freeman, Clara Saito aka SadSato ClaClown, Raoni/Muzho Saleh, Anto Lopez Espinosa, Reza Mirabi, Taka Taka, Sheng-Chiun (Rick) Lin, Maria Pisiou Pimara and Margo van de Linde.

And finally, we would like to thank you for supporting Veem—as a visitor, performer, former employee, board member, co-producer, or friend. As we say goodbye to Veem House, let it be a joyful farewell, one from a friend whose path may be uncertain for now but will always hold a special place in each and every one of us.

Good-bye! a kind good-bye,
I bid you now, my friend,
And though ’tis sad to speak the word,
To destiny I bend

OUR LAST EVENT! As you may know, Veem as we know it is coming to an end. While endings often bring the promise of new beginnings, they also deserve to be properly acknowledged and grieved. For Veem’s final event, we will host a salon dedicated to collective loss, grief, and mourning. We have invited 9 artists whose work already touches on these themes—whether personal, structural, or political—to share a 10-minute performance. This gathering will be an evening of reflection and connection, acknowledging not only the challenges of our current times but also the enduring commitment to creating art in the face of adversity.

Join us januari 19 during our last event and let us create a space where grief can be shared, connections deepend and transitions honoured. We shall profide dinner.

Only a few spots left!😮 Explore neurodivergent ways of experiencing the world around us this Saturday with shy*play Doing Neurodiversity, a participatory workshop by (they/them) and (they/them) in this colaboration with

This workshop invites bodyminds with a close affinity for embodied experiences of shyness, introversion and/or neurodivergence, as well as its many intersections, to participate in a workshop dedicated to experiments in neurodivergent sociality. All shy*play’s events are procedural: a collective construction of spacetime with those visiting (both human and more-than-human) whereby it is assumed that each mode of existing, seeing, voicing, experiencing, participating, expressing, and moving in the environment has the same existential value, all the while recognizing the effects of cumulative trauma load that neurotypical demands can have on a neurodivergent bodymind.

Who gets to be seen and who gets to be heard? During this one-week residency at Veem House, dance artist and choreographer alex blum will continue her vocal movement research to sketch a new solo work LILY SCREAMS (NOT YOUR DANISH GIRL) together with her critical friends juli frodermann and Ghaith Kween Quotainy.

Through the embodied production of voice(s) and the spatialisation of breath, alex is interested in the sonic choreographies of white femme hysteria, trans anger, and madness. By assuming the timbre, pitch, and breathiness of the voice to be dominant cultural cues of s*x assignment within the gender binary, LILY SCREAMS is a public rehearsal of soft wedges and hard ruptures into the sonic perception of gender and of listening relations with audiences and beyond.

Get your tickets through our website https://veem.house/program/lily-screams-not-your-danish-girl-alex-blum/

LILY SCREAMS is supported by the AFK and was incubated during the GARDENING #4, which is a GREENHOUSE project, produced by Nicole Beutler Projects and Veem House for Performance.

📢Calling all the bodyminds who feel a close affinity for embodied experiences of shyness, introversion and/or neurodivergence! Saturday November 2 Aion Arribas and antje nestel (they/theirs) bring their participatory performance Doing Neurodiversity to Veem!

shy*play’s Doing Neurodiversity is a three hour long participatory performance. Through embodied and physical techniques of relation, participants will explore together-in-difference the potential for valuing otherwise when departing from neurodivergent tendencies. What if there is no center of attention or space? How to practice a decentered visibility? How can we create an architecture that challenges the view that the human subject is at the center of experience?

Get your tickets now here: https://veem.house/program/shyplay-doing-neurodiversity-aion-arribas-and-antje-nestel-flam-festival-2/

This performance is part of Flam Amsterdam Whispering Skins, from 29 October to 2 of November. FLAM embraces the versatile medium of performance art and shows work that transcends disciplinary codes. Local and international artists present works that vary from subtle to physical, from conceptual to theatrical, from durational to fleeting encounters, from participatory works to installation. More than focusing on results FLAM opens space for artists to risk and experiment, cross discipline borders and present works which arise from artistic research.

''I am deeply intrigued by how we learn, remember, and forget things. Even though we might not always have access to certain memories, I believe that all of them are somehow stored within our bodies. It’s fascinating to me that plants, like the Mimosa Pudica, also have the ability to remember, learn, and forget. This inspires me to explore how we might learn from different species, imagining new choreographies based on these processes. Through this exploration, I aim to build up imaginaries that relate to how we remember, and to speculate on how we might reprogram our memories, allowing us to envision multiple futures. ''
