Sophie Walraven is a dutch painter who puts all of her bountiful energy and joy into her paintings. She crosses boundaries in the literal sense of the word by going abroad quite often to paint in a new environment, and in the figurative sense by trying new materials and new ways of reaching her audience. Besides working on paper and canvas, she paints on car wrecks, T-shirts, abandoned sheet music

and on your mother if she’ll let her. These new materials allow her to reach the masses in new ways, often guerrilla-style. The objects in her paintings vary from self-portraits and (city)still life’s to landscapes and wild and joyous animals. The message is that you can, even if the rules state something different. If the joy and energy come across, then it worked. Sophie was educated at ArtEZ, Arnhem. Her work can mostly be found in Amsterdam. On the street – she likes to brighten up the city by gluing her work to power houses – and in several expositions. One of those expositions is at the Amsterdam Museum, that recently acquired two of her works from her ‘Art at the Scrapyard’ expo. (They also bought the ticket she received for illegally posting her work through Amsterdam.)
