Yesterday we presented our research process and our work in the Waldeck Park in Maastricht. Fellow classmates and teachers from Interdisciplinary Arts Maastricht (iArts) as well as external coaches Stefan Cools and Sandra van den Beuken could get an insight into the way we worked and get a glimpse at the alpha version of our kit !

We will do an open workshop at Wemakethe.city in Amsterdam this saturday ! Come to make your own artwork or just to have a look !

Murphy's law states : Anything that can go wrong will go wrong. We experienced this first hand with the outcome of our first butterflies.
After heavy rain during the weekend, we were puzzled about the fact that our green moss turned... white ?!
Yet, as you can see, it didn't stop insects and caterpillars to visit our artwork !

So what is it ?
It turns out, too much water triggers the growth of fungi. Something that hasn't been stated within the moss-graffiti community, did we just discover the secret to the perfect moss-graffiti ?

Did you know that the supports a huge number of insect species ? Specifically butterflies ?
The (a beautiful orange and black ) that will lay its eggs on the nettle.
The (a butterfly
with eyes on its wings) larval foodplant is the stinging nettle.
The (a butterfly with dark wings and red+white markings) uses nettle as larval food and also to lay singular eggs on the leaves !
The (an orange and brown butterfly) preferes nettle as its foodplant.
The ( a brown-ish butterfly with black and white markings on its forewings) also uses nettle, amongst other plants, as its larval foodplant.

Although appearing menacing and unappealing nettles are actually very important for various butterfly species !

On the other hand, is a wonderful ground for seeds to grow in ! Here you can see our first try with . Pollinators, especially bumblebees and butterflies, are really fond of the nectar-rich flowers. We hope to see the seeds sprouting soon !

The end of an era.
We were kindly requested to remove the first generation of research, for obvious reasons since we did it in the backyard of our university !
Luckily, the is very easy to remove ! Just scrub it away with some water or, for a better and faster result, add a bit of lemon juice to the water.

So what did we learn from this first generation ?
As much as doing a with beer sounds like a wonderful idea, slugs and snails do not have the notion of moderation and will quickly realise that there is an open bar !

Mixtures with flour, besides leaving a white trace on the wall are not working

Do not put your on someone else's wall, especially if there isn't any other natural element next to it, because you might be asked to remove it. And if so, please do it kindly.

We will continue our experiments in a nearby park, where the collected moss came from ! One could say, back to its roots !

Different moss = different mixtures = different colors !
For our first two stencils, we tried to experiment with different mixtures in order to create the perfect one !
How will it interact with this new environment ? We are eager to find out !

No this isn't the next generation green booster juice ! With a fragrance of forest, these moss-sugar-dairy mixtures are applied on the wall. of some sorts.
But this is only the beginning, stay tuned as we find the perfect recipe and start working with stencils !
