Fruity, f**kable, colourful & sweetly sad & that's just Billy Mackenzie's voice (not really an adequate description), cohort Alan Rankine's Guitar & Keyboards are equally lush. Pop stars for a scintillating, titillating moment a few weeks after appearing on the cover of Smash Hits, the Associates broke up. Thereafter continuing in name only, as a Mackenzie solo vehicle, with diminishing artistic and commercial returns, until his death at 39. Sulk will forever be testament to Mackenzie and Rankine's moment of hedonistic adventure and mad creativity. Sulk? I nearly cried.

Somewhere between punk nihilism and new wave pop smarts, 'Rattus Norvegicus' positions The Stranglers as possibly the most elegantly brutish band of all time. Jean Jacques Burnel (fancy name) can write a song quoting from Percy Shelley and still sounds like the most idiotic drunken punk rock thug while prog rock keyboards prance around him. Just fu**ing fantastic really - full of killer compositions and brilliant, hilarious lyrics. And that bass!
