What do you think of when you think of the future?

FUTURES is the first building-wide exploration of the future and spans 32,000 square feet inside the Smithsonian Arts + Industries Building. Opening November 20, 2021, and on view until July 6, 2022, FUTURES is your guide to a vast array of interactives, artworks, technologies, and ideas that are glimpses into humanity’s next chapter. You are, after all, only the latest in a long line of future makers.

Smell a molecule. Clean your clothes in a wetland. Meditate with an AI robot. Travel through space and time. Watch water being harvested from air. Become an emoji. The FUTURES is yours to decide, debate, delight. We invite you to dream big, and imagine not just one future, but many possible futures on the horizon—playful, sustainable, inclusive. In moments of great change, we dare to be hopeful. How will you create the future you want to live in?

Part exhibition, part festival, FUTURES presents nearly 32,000 square feet of new immersive site-specific art installations, interactives, working experiments, inventions, speculative designs, and “artifacts of the future,” as well as historic objects and discoveries from 23 of the Smithsonian.....

Who should we trust with our data?

"As our lives become more digital, we are leaving increasingly large data trails online. Companies want us to sign in to collect and process our data, but we rarely have the time, or the information, to understand the full implications of these terms, conditions and privacy notices. Numerous groups including international organisations, governments, researchers and society groups have tried to improve the situation through the creation of new tools, taking inspiration from design practices and principles. However, whether these are improving trust in digital services is still uncertain."

This event will bring together researchers from the PROTECT European Training Network and the ADAPT Centre to discuss data ethics and privacy. Event is free to register and can be found below!

The SFI ADAPT Centre invites you to join a public Think-In on trust in regards to the collection and use of your data.

What does interspecies design look like?🐝🪶

Shifting away from the popular model of human-centred design strategies, interspecies design looks at beyond human approaches towards design. These approaches consider how non-human agents interact with human created spaces and objects, as well as the impact that human-made things has on the biosphere as a whole.

For more about interspecies design, check out our latest article by Sara Kaiser titled "From human-centred to interspecies design" linked below!

Long-term survival of humans on Earth is intimately tied to the long-term survival of an immense diversity of species. From human-centred to interspecies design explores how designers can engage in participatory practices that enable them to understand and empathise with the needs of non-human speci

Opening tonight, Uroboros Festival launches the 2021 edition of their program focused on the theme of Designing in Troubling Times. Check out the full line up of the program for a variety of events and workshops that ask what design can do to support positive change while exploring the cyclical processes of design imagination, innovation, failure and return!

Also be sure to check out three workshops under the title of "A Practical Guide to Ecomancy for the Digital Age" offered by Unbore Team Member Lyndsey Walsh as part of her feral creative collaboration with symbiont Jess Cockerill called Crawlers. The series consults both traditional magic ritual and scientific futures to reimagine ways in which we can make kin with our non-human companions and the planet.

Link to festival details and full program below!

The Uroboros festival explores what and how we can design in these troubling times to support positive change.

Can we reimagine how memories are made?

"Maybe, if we could find a way to express ourselves in a less mediated way, we could share our personal experiences to inspire diverse ways of living. Scientists have long tried to explore the ways our minds work when trying to connect with each other. When it comes to sharing emotions and memories, researches in neuroscience have revealed that verbal communication may not be the only accurate channel to connect with other individuals."

Gaia Caltavituro explores how memory has been shaped and is being re-invented by artists and designers in Unbore's latest article. Check out the link below to read more!

When it comes to sharing memories, both neuroscientists and bioartists and biodesigners have explored new ways of interacting with others, trying to break down the boundaries between speech and emotions. What if we could take each other onto a sensory journey through our most treasured and deep memo

Would you hack your brain with technology if it meant you could improve your life?

Transhumanism is a philosophical movement which advocates and predicts the enhancement of the human condition with technologies to enhance longevity, the body and cognitive abilities.

With the ever-growing demand for cognitive enhancement, improved health and expressing our unique identities, artists and designers have been exploring the brain and its transhuman potential through art and speculative design.

Read our latest article, linked below: 'Designing the Transhuman Mind to Enhance Brain Function, Explore Consciousness and Improve Mental Health.' 🧠📲 Words by Jess McCulloch.

Growing advancements in neuroscience and psychology are inspiring artists and designers to investigate the brain and how transhumanism, the physical and mental enhancement of the human organism, can help us store memories, explore consciousness and improve mental health.
