The Suzanne Biederberg Gallery is delighted to invite you to our latest exhibition of Juul van den Heuvel’s most recent work—collaborating over 35 years!

Across more than three decades, van den Heuvel has developed a distinctive body of work that is both personal and universal. Her art invites the viewer to slow down, to look closely and to find beauty in what is both fragile and hidden, humorous and deep.

Her tools and influences:
the iron blade - to cut the sharp edges into the cloth
charcoal - to add, layer by layer
cloth - touch, sculpt
yellow - to leave one’s comfort zone
cats - play
time - presence
teacher - David Bowie

According to van den Heuvel: Fragments of memories play an important role in our lives—in my practice, in the studio. They recur throughout the work, appearing as a mood, as a narrative, as an image. The studio IS the work, a space where thinking and making are inseparable.

In the studio, the hand touches material—the wool, to knit pieces of time. Wool, cloth and charcoal become tools for passing time. Knitting, layering and shaping it into form. Textiles, soft structures that hold traces of the past. Drawing, on paper, through the slow layering of charcoal, to reveal intensive labour and repetition.

Making becomes an act of survival. The thinking and the doing take place simultaneously. There are horses for their strength and vulnerability, fairy tales adjacent to reality, monsters and angels.

The studio: do not judge, but let it be guesswork. Let the work grow and change. All is permitted, all is allowed.

The Suzanne Biederberg Gallery is delighted to invite you to our second exhibition of Kars Persoon’s most recent work.

In ACCOMPLICE OF THE UNFINISHED, Persoon confronts the dizzying array of possibilities on a blank sheet of paper—the white, its potential, all that can appear, the open, it exists for the humanised fire of performance. And what then unfolds is constantly underway and unfinished.

In his long and esteemed career as an artist and teacher, Persoon (Eindhoven, 1954) has, beside his knowledgeable and informed interests in literature, music, poetry, philosophy and history, produced a huge body of experimental artwork.

Of his recent oeuvre, Persoon notes that, since 2025, form and content have come very close together. Using gum arabic with pigments, crayon and watercolour, he now works on stone paper, which allows him to work more precisely and revealing every trace of the action much more directly. Stone paper is very like marble, in that it has much more clarity, and its characteristic smoothness enhances his hand’s freedom, enabling him to better choreograph the figures. Persoon has also experienced a much greater intertwining of the themes and the characteristic appearance of the fluid and the solid.

The themes that come into focus in the works we are exhibiting are: the figure as individual (with its question of consciousness and self-awareness), the figure in encounters within a group, and its awareness of both; the figure in its connection with the Earth as a living organism (Bruno Latour); the process of BECOMING an image, and of the emerging image orienting itself toward a subsequent image. From these themes arise the title of this exhibition: ACCOMPLICE OF THE UNFINISHED. Regarding the role of the show’s sculpture, Persoon found the statement in Plato’s “Timaeus” most resonant: “What is the ever-existent that has no origin, and what is the ever-originating that never exists?” The sculpture represents BEING, while the works on paper represent BECOMING.

The Suzanne Biederberg Gallery has been delighted to begin 2026 with the return of Ton Zwerver and his new exhibition I just can’t say, maybe tomorrow. He continues to work with everyday objects, taking them out of their original context to give them a new meaning. What was once practical becomes sculptural, poetic, or absurd. In his work, he plays with the tension between control and letting loose, between thinking and not-knowing—uncertainly in motion.

In his new series, titled “Trying to get a grip on the situation”, Zwerver investigates the small, often unremarked-on moments of existence: the waiting, the doubting, the delaying. His own body is the starting point for sculptural situations, in which motion and rest alternate. The objects move not through technique but through their presence—through breathing, touching, and gravity.

Zwerver’s videos show these short-lived sculptures: colourful, playful, and sometimes painful, yet ephemeral—as soon as the filming ends, they fall into separate parts, waiting for the next improvisation. His work is temporary, physical, and intuitive. He acknowledges how the unknown and incompleteness are part of our everyday reality. His work invites one to look without expectation, to the moment in which something almost falls or stops or commences to move again.
Ton Zwerver (1951) lives and works in Amsterdam and is a graduate of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and the RIjksakademie. He exhibits, lectures, and conducts workshops nationally and internationally.

Swiping foot in Lies Neve's video mainly wants to know: I look better than those other feet, right?

Sometimes a single work of art is worth a visit to a gallery or art space in Amsterdam. This is true for Self-reflection for Feet (2025), a video by Lies Neve, in which a foot swipes past the Tinder offerings.

The big toe is a bit clumsy and blunt. Toes number 2 and 3 are a bit too close together. And that instep could have been a bit more pronounced. But: no toenail fungus or strange fungus, no hammertoes. This is actually a perfectly fine foot. Not a particularly beautiful thing, but certainly not an ugly foot that should stay in its sock.

The foot that stars in Self-reflection for Feet, a video by Lies Neve, is an average specimen. It's even unclear whether we're dealing with a male or female foot. Either way, this foot is looking for company. On an iPad, it swipes past its peers.

We see leisurely feet relaxing in the mud, athletic feet on the cinder track, and Burgundian feet snuggled comfortably in front of the fireplace. One pair of feet does a seductive half-step—they've clearly been practising in front of the mirror for hours. Another pair are being pampered by massaging hands.

Still not good enough, so next

A picture of wrinkled soles that clearly haven't had any moisturiser in ages is quickly swiped past. A pair of chubby toes is longing lingered over. But ultimately, the photos are swiped left every time. Which, in the language of dating apps like Tinder, means: still not good enough, next.

The foot might not want a partner for long walks or a quick fling for an evening of foot play. Those other feet are merely comparison materials, mirrors meant to answer questions like, "Do I meet the norm?" or "I look better than that, don't I?"

Rehabilitation for the Foot

Neve's website features a quote from "Symbolic Foot," with which philosopher Cornelis Verhoeven earned his doctorate in 1956. Later a professor, he is considered by many to be the most original thinker of our language in the 20th century, draws readers' attention to the large number of expressions in which feet play a role: from "living on a grand scale" and "getting on good terms" to "going barefoot" and "being fired on the spot." But as the body part furthest removed from the head, the foot must make do with a lowly appreciation.

Neve's video is a kind of rehabilitation for our lowly body part. At the same time, the equally relatable and hilarious "Self-Reflection for Feet" offers commentary on the self-promotion and narcissism that are so prevalent in contemporary visual culture.

More Feet

Feet are also the main characters in Lies Neve's Modern Nudes (1992). In this video, also part of this exhibition, a pair of feet leafs through a photo book full of artistic black-and-white nudes, which immediately become somewhat ludicrous.

Literature

Before Lies Neve studied art at De Ateliers, she studied literature at the University of Amsterdam.

Ordinariness in Miniature

Neve exhibits together with Maurice van Tellingen. He makes models and mock-ups of everyday objects: a colourful seesaw under a bell jar or a sandbank with a bench the size of a side table. Often, these are toys or play situations, but there's no fun involved.
