Recap Workshop Day of Empathy & Liberation Day

On May 8, children came together at OSCAM for a creative afternoon in collabo with Max music ().

During the workshop, we reflected on the meaning of Liberation Day and what freedom, empathy, and togetherness mean to us. The kids then created their own textile sculptures using different fabrics and materials.

Thank you to everyone who joined and made the afternoon a moment of conversation and imagination.

OSCAM featured in JAN Magazine

Recently, JAN Magazine () featured an interview with Marian Duff by Els van Asseldonk about the evolution of OSCAM and the importance of building lasting platforms for underrepresented voices within the cultural field.

The interview explores how lived experience, heritage, and community continue to shape the vision behind OSCAM, and reflects on the role cultural institutions can play in creating more accessible and representative spaces for future generations of artists and creatives.

Marian also shares how OSCAM has grown into a place where art, dialogue, and social connection come together, rooted in Amsterdam Southeast while remaining connected to broader international conversations around culture and inclusion.

Many thanks to JAN Magazine and Els van Asseldonk for the meaningful conversation and feature.

Opening: ‘Where We Land’

OSCAM presents ‘Where We Land’, the first solo exhibition by Paramaribo-based painter Vanity Wezer. Opening on June 11, 2026, as part of the Young OSCAM Art Kitchen (YOAK), the exhibition explores how place shapes the way we inhabit ourselves, experience time, and find meaning in the everyday. In figurative paintings, Wezer captures moments of landing: the quiet, everyday rhythms of life in Suriname.

Working with acrylic on canvas, she brings together scenes from her daily life and the natural environment of Suriname. Her paintings reflect the climate, landscape, and rhythm of the country, showing how surroundings influence the way we experience time and inhabit space.

As a self-taught painter and part of the interdisciplinary creative collective LFMC (Lowrey Foley McClane), Wezer explores how heritage lives on in gestures, routines, silences, and the spaces we occupy. Suriname becomes tangible in the humidity, light, and stillness of her work.

We were inspired by so many amazing artists that powerfully center diaspora, identity, and cultural narratives. Drawing from personal experiences and heritage, they create works that invite reflection, recognition, and connection.

A special thanks to all the artists putting the diaspora on the map during this years’ edition.
