BABEL - A BOOK BY R.F. KUANG

ALICE IN BORDERLAND SEASON 2

Have you heard about the new season of "Alice in Borderland"? We're really excited to see it because the first season was a great hit! It's a Japanese series based on a popular manga, and it has this amazing blend of action, adventure, and sci-fi elements. The second season is coming out on December 22nd, and it looks like it's going to be even more exciting than the first one.

Heb je al gehoord dat er een nieuw seizoen komt van "Alice in Borderland"? We zijn er erg enthousiast over, want het eerste seizoen was een grote hit! Het is een Japanse serie gebaseerd op een populaire manga, en het heeft een geweldige mix van actie, avontuur en sci-fi elementen. Het tweede seizoen komt uit op 22 december, en het ziet er naar uit dat het nog spannender wordt dan het eerste seizoen.

Een van de dingen die we geweldig vinden aan "Alice in Borderland" zijn de verbluffende visuele effecten. Ze brengen de verlaten en futuristische versie van Tokyo tot leven op een manier die zowel griezelig als mooi is. Het gebruik van CGI draagt bij aan het gevoel van isolatie en gevaar, wat perfect is voor het verhaal.

Daarbij gaat het om de landen focus in onze programmaserie Mythen van de Wereld, het jaarlijkse themaprogramma en – samen met de programmeur van Imagine Expanded, het organiseren van events binnen dit digitale programma. Je doet voorstellen voor specials, onderzoekt samenwerkingen en partnerschappen met andere culturele organisaties, universiteiten, kunstenaars en communities. Je ontwikkelt programma’s die gevarieerd zijn in opzet en vorm, en die diverse publieksgroepen kunnen aanspreken. This year's Myths of the World theme focused on the past and present of Hong Kong cinema! For a long time, Hong Kong led the way in the field of Asian genre films, from fantasy to kung fu to heroic bloodshed. Meanwhile, Mainland China has tightened its grip on the city and the question is whether and how the local film industry will be able to hold its own. On Friday, Oct. 29, American Author and Asian Cinema expert Grady Hendrix delivered a lecture under the tantalizing title, Hong Kong Doesn't Exist. Hong Kong doesn't exist? Yes, but not as it has presented itself to the outside world in countless films for decades.

Grady Hendrix is a founding member of Subway Cinema and the New York Asian Film Festival, and has written about Hong Kong cinema for Variety, Film Comment, the British Film Institute, the Criterion Collection and more. The Hong Kong film style, its themes and even its stars have spread everywhere. It is not easy to find someone on this planet who has never heard of Jackie Chan or John Woo. But with its thousands of films, Hong Kong has built and version of itself and of China that does not exist in reality. This invisible country lives in the hearts and minds of millions of people. In his lecture, Grady took us through the films that transformed Hong Kong into "a kingdom of dreams”. Whatever the future of the metropolis looks like, the pioneering work of John Woo, Tsui Hark, Johnnie To and Jackie Chan, among others, will not be erased.

EDUCATIE & KIDS RECAP
De stemming zat er bij onze jongste deelnemers aan het festival goed in. Er werd gejoeld om de vertoningen van de eigen films tijdens de One Minute Horror competitie, en de eerste ervaringen met het maken van een film heeft de leerlingen niet koud gelaten. Voorafgaand aan hun films werd Niels Bourgonje zijn film ‘Woodland Cemetary’ vertoond. Het jonge makers publiek was het meest ‘I had the most fun screening ever, since they screamed their asses off’ volgens Niels.

In samenwerking met het Nederlands Debat instituut werd het programma Monsters vs Scientists ontwikkeld. Een fun programma met een serieuze ondertoon. Na het vertonen van Heart of Gold (Simon Filliot) werd er fel gedebatteerd door de leerlingen van het Berlage Lyceum. Ook tijdens het bezoek van de debat-club van het Spinoza20first barste de strijd los. Leerlingen stonden op om argumenten te pareren, vulde hun teamgenoten aan en bevochten het recht om de beker voor ‘best debater’ te winnen.

Ook de allerjongsten en hun ouders maakte kennis met Imagine via de knutselochtend in De Hallen. Vijfendertig kinderen maakte spookjes naar aanleiding van het thema Halloween. En twee kinderen wonnen tickets voor de klassieker The Addams Family!

This year Imagine hosted two world premieres from its home country, the Netherlands. Starting with Dan Geesin's Sputum, which experienced its baptism of fire on Thursday Oct. 28. In this dystopian fantasy in claustrophobic black and white, human saliva is the focus of a struggle in a rigid class society. For his own futuristic universe, Dan Geesin created original concept art, installations and backstories of the characters. It is immersive filmmaking at its most personal and experimental, with a nod to early Cronenberg and Von Trier, a radically different perspective and even a language of its own. But it is the endearing love story beneath all that dust and grit that sticks most. We are proud to have presented the Dutch premiere of this sci-fi labor of love. Director Dan Geesin was at the premiere to close Sputum with a Q&A.

The second world premiere took place the next day, director Ruben Broekhuis' debut film Exhibit #8, in which horror lurks just beneath social reality. The film covers a blood tense search - found footage! - for a Bosnian refugee who mysteriously disappeared from an asylum seekers' center. Broekhuis makes clever use of the kind of imagery we know from found footage horror, without completely falling back on that format. The result is a penetrating, close-to-the-skin film, with the horrors of this time and this society.

This year we had a well-stocked Industry programme, complete with a pair of public Masterclasses with 2 masters from the industry. This time on all things film music & sound! Great film music takes a film to the next level and countless soundtracks have become classics themselves. But what makes an impactful film score and how do you make it? Our special guests showed us how. On Wednesday, the 2nd of November, the famous British composer Simon Boswell shared his knowledge with us, followed on Thursday by German sound designer Frank Kruse who taught us the ins and outs of great sound design. Simon Boswell has previously been a guest at Imagine in 2010, and came back to Amsterdam with a brand-new master organized in collaboration with Buma Music in Motion. Boswell spoke enthusiastically about his adventures in the film industry, about his collaboration with Elton John (!) and about the albums he produced for two popes (!!). Anecdotes that were interspersed with insights into Boswell's working methods. His collaborations went from Argento all the way to the pope! At least as important as the music is the sound design of a film. The German Frank Kruse (1986) is one of the big names in the business. Kruse has provided his services to small independent films, as well as extremely expensive blockbusters such as Cloud Atlas (2012) and The Matrix Resurrections (2021) by the Wachowski sisters, and Ron Howard's In the Heart of the Sea (2015). Horror, fantasy and sci-fi occupy a prominent place on his resume, see Suspiria (2018) and His House (2020), among others. Not surprising considering how it all began for Kruse. Imagine is glad to have hosted these masters – hopefully soon again!

Our festival weekend had many highlights, one of whom our special guest Eleanor Crook attending the festival all the way from the UK. The renowned anatomical artist came to share her knowledge with us on Anatomical Expressionism and Wax! The talk Anatomy Goes to The Movies dived deep into the fear of the biological which can infiltrate, rend, and mutate our own bodies into a living sculpture of dread and monstrosities (Featuring some heavy and painful illustrations – yikes!). During her Create Your Own Wax Creature workshop, the attendees created their own worst nightmares and got to took them home afterwards! The workshop was accompanied by a talk for Eleanor, because the more specialized knowledge the artist has, the more terrifying their creation is! It was sold out TWICE, because who wouldn’t want to sculpt their own deadly demon? It is no miracle as to why Eleanor Crook is known for her hyper realistic and morbid wax sculpture work for science and medical museums such as Gordon Museum of Pathology and Museum Vrolik. She took inspiration from well over 600 year of anatomical museums and glass jar specimens – a real master has taught us at Imagine this year!

This edition we had some awesome firsts, such as the first ever Imagine Korean Night. Friday 28th, we offered a Korean double-bill (Hunt + Project Wolf Hunting) accompanied by South Korean snacks and drinks from local Asian supermarket Shilla, and an live Q&A. With Hunt, the famous actor Lee Jung Jae (known from Squid Game) makes his debut as a director with the action thriller! It is set in the 1980’s, when South Korea is still a military dictatorship, when a North-Korean spy infiltrates the South Korean security service. It was a good two hours of nerve-wracking action and spy games. After that was the screening of Project Wolf Hunting, which waltzed over the guests even more relentlessly with its blood-soaked cat-and-mouse plot. In Project Wolf Hunting, a group of deported criminals take control of a ship bound for South Korea Con Air-style. But an even greater evil is hiding on board. Director Kim Hongsun, known for the action thriller Traffickers and exorcism horror Metamorphosis, came to Amsterdam to attend the festival as a special guest. At the screening of the film, he gave an introduction as well as a Q&A to close the Korean Night were he gave an insight on the process of the film and how he got his hands on so much blood 🩸

Now that we are neatly packed up again, back in the office and already starting the preparations for the next edition, we would like to take a look back at some highlights of the 38th edition now that the festival has come to an end. The award ceremony sounded the official farewell salute to the Imagine Film Festival 2022. During the closing night, prior to the Norwegian satirical closing film Sick of Myself, the award winners were announced. Winner of the Imagine Pitch Award as part of the Imagine Project Platform was Alice by director Jan Verdijk and producer Daniel Dow. The Sea Devil (Called the Black Tulip before) for best feature film went to the Tunisian thriller Ashkal by director Youssef Chebbie. The Méliès for best short European film went to the Dutch gnome-splatter comedy Gnomes by Ruwan Heggelman. The Méliès d'Argent for best European feature film to the gripping horror film Attachment by Dane Gabriel Bier Gislason. This year's Silver Scream Award goes to Escape to the Silver Globe by director Kuba Mikurda.⁠

Nu dat we weer netjes zijn ingepakt, terug op kantoor zijn en alweer beginnen met de voorbereidingen voor de volgende editie kijken we graag nog even terug naar wat hoogtepunten van editie 38. Met de prijsuitreiking klonk het officiële afscheidsgroet van het Imagine Film Festival 2022. Tijdens de slotavond, voorafgaand aan de Noorse satirische slotfilm Sick of Myself, werden de prijswinnaars bekend gemaakt. Winnaar van de Imagine Pitch Award als onderdeel van het Imagine Project Platform was Alice van regisseur Jan Verdijk en producent Daniel Dow. De Sea Devil (eerder de Black Tulip genoemd) voor beste speelfilm ging naar de Tunesische thriller Ashkal van regisseur Youssef Chebbie. De Méliès voor beste korte Europese film ging naar de Nederlandse kabouter-spletterkomedie Gnomes van Ruwan Heggelman. After 10 days of Imagine 2022, we still have one prize to award - our coveted audience award: the Silver Scream Award. After counting all your score cards, we can announce that the Polish documentary film Escape to the Silver Globe is taking the Silver Scream!
