We Are Made Of, 2007

Born in Moscow, Russia, Oleg Dou began experimenting with early versions of Photoshop at just 13. He studied design, worked as a web designer, and bought his first professional camera in 2005. Today, his work is exhibited in galleries worldwide, establishing him as one of the most distinctive and promising artists of his generation.

Featured in the FotoFest Biennial 2012 as part of Contemporary Russian Photography, his work is now included in Global Visions – FotoFest at 40, celebrating four decades of the festival and its international impact.

“Usually such portraits of the so-called 1% are biting and satirical – think of Martin Parr’s Luxury or Lauren Greenfield’s Generation Wealth. Behind the Hedges acknowledges wealth inequality in the introduction, and quotes Fitzgerald on the “vast carelessness” of rich people in its epigraph, but otherwise it does not judge. Instead, Vogt throws open the door to this cloistered world, with its recherché rituals and passed-down privileges, and invites us to make up our own minds.”

Here’s an excerpt from a review of ‘Behind the Hedges’, the new book by .

“Sometimes, the etching brightness of illumination nearly erodes the human torso, as if she had left in a rush, or evaporated like water in excessive heat. The images appear momentary, as if they were in the process of becoming or disappearing.”

— Excerpt from the essay by Juhani Pallasmaa (Architect, Professor and Writer) in ‘This Room Will Survive Me’, cindy konits’ new book.

“Taken together, the images, essays, and historical materials in this book are meant to be read as a conversation rather than a conclusion. FotoFest at forty is not a final statement, but a pause to look back and look forward at once. In a world saturated with images, this volume invites readers to slow down, to look closely, and to consider how photography continues to help us understand one another and the world we share.”

“I have been working on “This Room” since the discovery of an obsolete Fuji professional instant camera and a batch of expired film at the bottom of my studio closet in September 2019.
I began experimenting with it by photographing myself in an abandoned house outside my neighbourhood. Eventually, I turned my instant camera on myself in my home in a flood of early morning window light.
I was struck by the fusion of my body with other objects in the room — bedsheets, furniture and wallpaper, for example.
One day, the chance reading of an aphorism by Don Paterson in an old New Yorker magazine revealed to me vividly the unintentional outcome of what I had been photographing. “Almost everything in the room will survive you. To the room, you are already a ghost.”

— This Room Will Survive Me: An interview with by Gary Van Zante

“Wealth is attainable but lineage is not. Their world remains akin to a foreign country — we can visit, but even if we amass fortunes of our own and linger for a lifetime, we know we will never be from it.”
- Excerpt from the essay by Jennifer Garza - Cuen in ‘Behind the Hedges’, Will Vogt’s new book.
